Anyone else tired of the constant talk about diversity and inclusion?

It has become the go-to phrase for almost anything companies are doing these days and it's complete bollocks. Diversity in itself isn't helpful since the real value is in diverse ideas and not just skin color or sexual preference. And inclusion is basically marginalizing the majority of the population by making them "normal", therefore toxic.

Agree? Thoughts?

The idea of hiring to solely promote diversity goes directly against the idea of meritocracy. People should be hired on their merit irrespective of what social group they belong in.

People are hired on merit for their diversity of experience.

Someone in the majority asserting diversity of ideas is akin to a junior person asserting their theoretical ideas have more merit than someone with lived experience.

I think we need to ban all talk about being inclusive of white guys. Having to pretend they need it too is what makes everything so watered down and pointless.

You're a hypocrite through and through working for a company founded by an evil white man and taking his money. Why don't you go work somewhere else? Or do you just want to preach principles and not actually do anything about it.

I didn't say white men are bad. I said that diversity efforts shouldn't pander to white men who are already present and included. Acting like a suggestion to not prioritize white guys in even a tiny way is equivalent to calling them evil is exactly the idiocy that leads people to vote for Trump, yes.

Disappointing to see the poll results. The way people are expressing themselves in this thread is the reason we need to champion the concept of inclusion.

maybe the reason people are expressing themselves the way they are and the reason for the poll results is the way you conducted your policy of inclusion

How can it be their fault if they’re the good guys

Yeah, if the majority of people hate a policy, it must be the audience’s fault.

Turns out that diversity and inclusion programs are actually quite divisive. When you put people into different tribes and have a transparently systemic bias towards select groups, it’s human nature to fight back.

I was told in team meeting that we don't have woman in team so I am going to reject any dude if recruiter brings it to me. The lead asked us to support him in this & diversity.
I questioned back saying if a man is talented we should not reject but send him to different team so we don't lose talent. But he was like No, CK wide we need more diversity.
One sycophant in team was supporting him and like yeah we need diversity so we can build different product. Most stupid conversation ever! We are a platform team not even product building. We do something done by other companies at least 1000 times!

Your understanding is off base and you mis-frame D&I.

The real value is in diversity of experience, not ideas. Ideas are a dime a dozen.

And, if inclusion is excluding, then it isn’t inclusion, by definition.

Your statement is really telling of your mindset:

“...inclusion is basically marginalizing the majority of the population by making them "normal", therefore toxic.”

Businesses operate better when more employees get along and are viewed as “normal,” rather than your us vs them mentality in the workplace.

Diversity of ideas or experience works sometimes. Do you want diversity of ideas on the middle of a gun fight on the front? No. Is Northern Europe or Japan better for being fairly homogeneous?

    • OpenTable Meliodas
We are talking about in the business setting.

And there is a significant distinction between a diversity of ideas and experience.

There are some business settings where it is good and others where it is bad. Are language barriers good diversity? Not for efficiency.

If everyone has different experiences but the same ideas, that’s good to you?
      Oct 7
    • OpenTable Meliodas
It is good for efficiency to have native language speakers that can tailor products to local markets.

Having the same ideas, but claiming they are diverse, because everyone has the same experience and doesn’t know any better isn’t good for business.
      Oct 7
    • Intel adbC65
In that local market, is it beneficial to have a multitude of languages amongst the developers? My thought would be no, you want singularity of language.

The example I had was if everyone has the same idea but diverse backgrounds. Is that good in your opinion?
