A recruiter reached out to me and had a quick call. Seems like they are hiring for a senior position but was asking for my expectation on the salary. I asked instead for the range for the base salary at PD and was given 105k-135k which is way below my expectation. I told him I would get back to him later with some numbers I want but is this normal even for a senior role? Also how much stock can you expect? I have over 10yrs of experience. Bit puzzled that company with a successful IPO will pay so little.
Seems pretty low. A friend of mine at Uber was at 151k with 2 years of experience
That sounds like they misunderstood your question, that sounds like a level 1 salary at PD.
I know a Jr eng that had 115k base and an intermediate eng making 125k base. You should be able to get a bit above 135k as a senior but not that much more. They are pretty cheap
They are exceptionally cheap no matter where you are, including SF. Or, as the CEO puts it, “very efficient.” Be sure to ask for more details on PTO as well, like how much PTO you’ll be forced to use for holidays that _everyone_ is forced to take off, but aren’t considered normal paid holidays.
Oh man, that forced PTO was hated internally and the execs threw a fit about it. I find the post-Christmas work a perfect time to do some study, catch up on trends, clear out old Todo items. Let me take my vacation when I want it, or make forced PTO not count against the vacation days
Thanks for the info both of you. Any info on options? You guys are doing pretty well after the IPO unlike other companies.
They give very few option grants. The value of mine has 10x and it's still not worth talking about.
Wow. Thanks. Plan on leaving soon then?
BTW I did give them a higher range for my base and they still decided to move ahead but I don't know if they expect I'll be taking less options because of this. It wasn't discussed at all so I have no idea what to expect. And I'm just starting the interview process and not really comfortable discussing compensation before being interviewed.
With engineering in Toronto, outsourced office in Russia, and now a brand new office in Atlanta we don't need to pay competitive SF wages to staff up (SF wages are crazy compared to the rest of the country). The writing for engineers in SF is on the wall, and expect most of your team to be remote.
They actually stopped hiring remote. But Toronto is basically outsourcing.
Is this in Texas?
Nope. San Francisco.
