I have an offer to move to Sydney, but am torn if it’s the right decision. Would love to get input from those that have made the move, what was the pros and cons. Current TC- USA $265k Potential TC- Sydney $230k AUD
Don’t if you are young.
do it..... better chance of promotions
Sydney is well and truly a 1st class major city. Unless you have a niche lifestyle that only really exists in Nor Cal you’ll find your groove there. Housing is generally definitely cheaper than the Bay Area but day to day things are generally more expensive, especially eating out and pubs/clubs. I’m sure you know that the AUD is weak compared to the US right now but that is rather irrelevant unless you have student loans etc etc back in the states. Ultimately it really depends on your financial status. You’re taking a face value and comparative paycut but conversely that will look great on your resume if/when you return.
Congratulations.. go for it..
That is a great TC for Australia, I would take the offer. You’ll also get tax-funded healthcare, and taxes are similar to Federal + CA.
The quality of life there is 10 times better than US. Bay Area is shit when it comes to your lifestyle. My plan is to move there after I hit 40 and start my family there.
Could you elaborate on quality of life? Is it work life balance? Better health care etc?
Everything ...... work life balance is great....aussies are generally laid back and chill, great food, amazing beer, top notch beaches....can’t comment on the healthcare as I haven’t lived there for long.
Im an Australian and doing the opposite, just because US salaries are so much higher. But if you're looking for a new experience and a much more relaxed lifestyle, Australia really is a great place to live, and people are similar to Americans in a lot of ways, so you'll really feel quite at home. Personally I think Melbourne is a far better to city to live in and there's a lot of tech jobs there as well.
Congrats! Does the US allow you to significantly increase your savings vs Aus? Would love to do Melbourne, not as crazy as Sydney in housing prices. But the company is in Sydney
I second that Australia is any easier assimilation for an American than any other English speaking nation
Do you play cricket? If yes there will be some sport to watch..
If you can come back easily why not go for a couple years and see the world? US TC will always be waiting
True. But it’s about building the nest egg. TC in Aus is generally lower, with similar expenses.... so worried about the missed savings...
