For those of you that are on the way to becoming an entrepreneur, what has your path been like? What advice would you have? All aspiring entrepreneurs are welcome: solo software builders, consultants/freelancers, venture backed startup founders, brick and mortar business owners, etc. I’ve been working on side projects outside of my full time job that generate a little bit of steady revenue, but the dream is to one day run my businesses full time and have them support me and my family. So I personally am going down the “solo software entrepreneur” path, given my skill sets and passions. I’ve tried both the consultant and venture backed start up founder paths a little before and quickly realized that they’re not for me.
Like you and me they would not be spending time on Blind 🙂...
True! What’s your story? :)
A friend once approached me with an opportunity to become an entrepreneur. I was excited. He said I have to it takes to become one. Fanned my ego a bit. However, in order to become one, I needed to tick some pre-requisites. Starting with a meeting. I said, “Sure! Why not?”. I attended this meeting. It was for Amway. I am no longer friends with that guy.
Solo engineer here, tech director with a family. It's been a complete nightmare getting things going. 2. Stinking. Years. Into my trillion-dollar saas app, and it's not even REMOTELY close to fundable. 😠
Dont you have a team?? It would be impossible without a team to startup something
No team yet... Milestones are POC/MVP -> Funding -> Team -> More Building. Just me until I'm fundable. Being disruptive, the POC has to be almost entirely built-out to properly illustrate. That's the tough part.
I left my job at Uber a few months ago to start my own startup. I worked on it on the side for my last few months in the job, but it wasn’t enough, my progress was so slow. Since being full-time, progress has ramped up. I’ve designed UIs, recruited others, gotten an investor, started development, and am getting closer to releasing a product every day. All I can say is this has been super fun and a great learning experience for me. If you’re young and can afford it, do it!
I'm jealous! With the family involved, I have to play the awkward line between risk and safe. It's tricky. I feel good about my POC milestone, but jeez getting there... It's a pretty disruptive concept, so POC - for the sake of illustration - is pretty much a v1 launch. If I could quit my job and hammer away at it for a month or so, I'd be good. <- not an option, though ☹️
Following. Have built 2 startups and will build no. 3 - looking for awesome entrepreneurs now.
Would love to meet and know more. Sending dm
I've been working on a side project to start a business. But the start up costs will be super low so I don't need to get funding. My day job remains just a day job at this point. I expect the side business to be successful, but not wildly so. Not some wild idea to make millions. But maybe to get an extra 100k/yr
I have a similar mindset and thought process. No fantasy of being an overnight millionaire - if at all I get it to that level. If I can get the side business to ramp up and generate enough income to lead a decent life I’ll be happy and content. I feel it’s more important to me to make a small positive difference to others in need than chasing and accumulating wealth while missing out on what life truly is all about.
I have a non tech side business that basically just involves throwing money at a couple vendors and running to the post office once a week. It makes me as much as my take home salary (not TC, yet) but it’s pretty nice.
