Like it or not appearance matters A LOT in sales. When your job is to make cold contact with total strangers or to improve the relationship with existing customers, how you present yourself is important. All the salespersons that I have seen around here are sharply dressed, on top of being drop dead gorgeous. Beautiful people get less declines when they send out a meeting invite.

Sales: How other people perceive you matter. It helps close deals. Engineering: What you output/produce matters far more than how you're perceived. Perception matters too, just not as much as raw technical ability.
