Apple (Bangalore) vs AWS (Bangalore) vs Spotify (Stockholm)

26 yo with 4 yoe based in India. Have offers from all 3. Currently working as a technical lead with TC 42L.

Even if you're based out of India, would love some advice.

1) Apple | ICT3
30L base + joining bonus 5L + rsu ($74000) + 2.5L relocation + 5% yearly bonus
~ 48L/year

2) AWS | SDE2
TC is very similar to above except stocks and it's vesting schedule ~ 48L/year.

3) Spotify | Engineer II
660K SEK base = ~48L per annum + $66,500 stocks

Taxes and cost of living are high in Sweden so I'll be saving comparatively lesser than the other two. Never had a dream of moving to Europe but open to trying it out but have no plans of settling there long term.

I know for a fact that Spotify has the best culture among all three. AWS has mixed reviews but I feel I'll learn the most there. Apple, not sure about the culture and not sure about learning opportunities either.

I'm having to choose between staying in India with good savings and strong brand (APPL and AWS, in that order :) which'll help a lot in the future vs lesser savings and living in Europe. Leaning towards joining Apple because of the brand and wlb.

Any insights on any of these companies, quality of work and advice in general would be great.

Apple’s team is relatively new and is growing. More opportunities and since you are very young, it helps your profile for sure. And more and more will be pushed there in future. But beware, they don’t always send new tech outside of Cupertino; ask what you will be working on and if it’s a maintenance project.
Amazon has been there in Bangalore for a while now, more opportunities to go to Seattle if you are doing good. Good learning as well and some teams are really good. But AWS, they suck your blood out. Forget your weekends and nights.
Spotify, good company; Sweden is a great place to live with best wlb anywhere in the world. But not much savings. You will be in a better position if you choose Apple or Amazon.

As far as I know, all that Apple has in Bangalore is IS&T which is the most hated org in whole of Apple since they comprise of the most incompetent engineers and all they do is tech support type work. Please don’t join Apple if the team is IS&T. You will thank me later.

It’s not just IS&T that’s in Bangalore. I have a friend(manager) who hired in Bangalore last year and it’s not IS&T.

Can you share your current salary breakdown? 42L @ 4 YOE seems pretty high?

All cash. I've been coding since school and like to think I'm pretty good at what I do. Have made commits into multiple large scale open source projects (Apache, Google, Facebook etc), consulted for multiple companies across domains while in college, published apps of my own and have created a lot of large scale systems at my current org. Have also delivered talks on multiple subjects over the past years.
So in terms of professional experience, I have just 4. But otherwise, I've been software engineering since a long time and love it!

I understand that, just another thing how would you suggest other who want to be at your place move forward?

It is evident you had an early start, but what about the late bloomers? Is leet the only one?
      Nov 8
    • New lazynut
      OP
I don't think leet helps you become better software engineer. Just helps crack faang. ;)

I believe passion is really important. Given a problem statement, you either use all knowledge/tools at your disposal to solve it or you learn something new if that's what it takes. But you don't give up on the problem. You solve it to the best of your abilities and you'll keep learning a lot on the way.

Other than that, network, always have mentor(s), hangout with people smarter than you, diversify your skillset.. you get the gist. ;)

You will enjoy great wlb and probably other Sweden. Be wary of the weather and social circles assuming you are Indian. Language is another aspect. But it's not going to be difficult. Swedes are a bit closed and introverts, but fun once you get to know them

thanks. I'm a bit concerned about getting lonely yes because I would be living alone. Plus, would need to live independently cooking/cleaning on my own which doesn't excite me. :) Can easily hire someone to do chores in India.

Living in Stockholm is really wonderful. Ofcourse there has been housing scarcity. You will get a lot of time for yourself, of you can cook then fine, else eating out you have to little options. Forget the kind of Indian food you get here in the US.

Apple TC increases every year as they give bonus and yearly refreshers. Amazon TC very likely to remain same for next 4 years unless you get promoted.

Spotify is a good brand but close call.
Spotify or Apple.stay away from AWS

Spotify will give you better QOL
Apple will give you better growth most likely.
Maybe you could work in Apple for a year and try transferring to an Apple office abroad?

There is no scope of transferring to foreign offices from Apple India at least in the near future.

Please go ahead and ask your recruiter what Org your hiring is for.
If it is for IS&T please read about it online before taking a call. The stock refreshes are massive in IS&T if quality of work is not a priority, however if it is you would probably be better off in Amazon / Spotify.
That said if your org is different it might be better. Insist on talking to a couple of engineers from your intended team and then take a call.

QoL, wlb, long term ( great healthcare and education system , cheaper and headache free to raise kids) , easy for travelling to many places vs career growth, savings, staying close to family, delegate all house work.

4 Yoe and tech lead? What is your current company, congrats on the offers btw. As per me stay in India, and out of apple and aws, if learning is your preference join aws, if money then join Apple, my friend was working at Amazon as sde-2 and moved to Apple, he is enjoying good hikes and nice refreshers there. He is not focused on coding now( only maintenance work, he is in big data org in Hyderabad) 😂 doing some drama clubs and all.

I would prefer India. You already know people there. Quality of life should also include social life. You will save more money in the long run. The are more opportunities. Only place I would prefer more is the West coast in US for the career growth

Sweden is great place for young crowd without kids. It’s very liberal country and kids and teens are tend to get spoiled very fast. Go enjoy in Sweden and comeback. I was in Gothenburg for a while - liked that place for visiting but not living
