Apple IC4 YOE

Jun 1 31 Comments

I was told by a friend in Apple that IC4 requires about 10 YOE for MS and about 5 YOE for Phd for a chip design role.
Is this true?
I am expecting 5 YOE for MS to qualify IC4

5 YOE definitely sounds low for IC4 but it is a wide spectrum

      What's the median YOE of IC4? 7?

I’m not in HR so don’t have the stats. I joined at IC4 with 10 YOE. Granted probably on the higher end.

I take it back. 5 in Apple should def be sufficient. If you come from outside, no chance in 5

I agreed to come to Apple at ICT4 with 18YOE, but that’s on me. I should have played my hand better. 4.5 years at Apple.

I was a 3yr manager at my last company, thought I needed to come to Apple to prove that I was the best I could be. Took major step back to IC, and didn’t even realize how far a step back the comp was until I got here to the Bay Area. But again, it was my fault, I was enamored by the prestige and was not thinking straight I guess. I’m in a good position going forward (key talent/high growth trajectory) but I’m still behind where I thought I would be after almost 5 years here. I blame most of that on a shitty manager

I joined Apple recently as IC4 . To be honest I’m doubting my decision . Pay is good but I feel my manager is not good as well. I have been working from 8 am till 10:30 pm at night. Just feel this is not sustainable for me in the long run . Not sure if this will improve or should I look to switch teams internally ? Any advice ?

I felt buyers remorse the first day, my first year was a nightmare with long hours and trying to make a reputation for myself. But I am established now and my compensation is where it should be. Work life balance is better now because I know what is important and what is fake important, this is extremely important to know. Not everything is on fire and if you work like it is you will burn out.

It heavily depends on org, I do have friends become ICT4 within 3 years, and I was in a shitty org that would take about 15...

Does anyone know refresher for M2 and above at Apple ?

I joined apple seg after masters and got to ict4 in 3.5 years but I know other ict2s with 5 years experience, all at apple. I had a colleague with 12 yoe who joined as ict3. It is easier to get promoted to a level than hired to the same level.

Refreshers ? How were they ?

As ict4, it was around 100-110k with best possible perf review. I left seg in 2015. It might have changed since then.

Pretty low for a top performer . I guess seg pays low ?

I only knew 2 other ict4s that I could comfortably talk comp. Theirs were similar.(90k for 7/9 and 100k for 9/9). But I do not have other data points.

At the time, Apple stock was doing great and my previous grants added up such that I was making >350k. That might be one of the reasons my ict4 grants were low.

My ict3 grants were 80k. (Got 2 grants as ict3, both with best possible perf review).

that’s strange only 10-20k bump in a ic4 level ? hmm thanks for sharing. Which team were u in ? I saw some guys here post 120-160 K for ic4 level .. but maybe it varies with team and experience level ?

One of my friend got ICT4 recently with 5 years of MS experience, total 6 years of experience. So it’s definitely possible.

Are u in SEG or devices HW? What’s the refresher rate for ICT5? and also do director and above touch 1 million TC ?

There are documented criteria for each level. If you fit into that role you can get the promotion, if you don’t you stay at your level. Number of years don’t matter much.

Yes 5 yoe is definitely enough for ict4 if all of those years are at Apple. Apple definitely tends to reward those that have been at the company a long time if you perform. If you are new, you have to prove yourself

Your friend is guessing at best. It doesn’t require years of experience, it requires performance at ICT3 that warrants a promotion. And of course a manager who thinks you should be one, and others agreeing. Or of course some other indication of ability that jibes with it, if you got hired at that level
