Currently a senior front end eng at a startup in the Northeast, making good base for a startup at 170k. I got a verbal offer from apple: Position: Senior UI Developer Location: SFBA YOE: 9 total as SWE, 4-5 as front-end and full-stack Base: 155-170k RSU: 100k Sign on: 20k Relocation: ~12k I fucked up in two ways, first by letting my current base slip to the recruiter, and second by not doing enough research on TC beyond base so I didn't immediately have an expectation when the offer was made (I actually didn't even expect an offer). I haven't accepted the verbal offer yet, and I feel like it's a bit low on the RSUs from what I see here but worried I no longer have much bargaining power since I didn't set a good expectation up front. Im happy with my current position, so walking away is not a problem at all However I do want the position if I can get the offer up to match my current base and more like 200-250k RSUs, I'm just not sure the best way to approach since I've never really had to negotiate much for previous positions.
Idk UI salaries but that sounds low tbh
Ideally your base should increase to at least cover cost of living adjustment... should get a base close to 200k and increase rsu to relocate from (Boston?) to the bay
Boston, yeah. Covering cost of living was what I was hoping for, just not sure if I'll get immediately rejected for coming back with something that much higher. I probably will either way, cause like I said I like my current position, but do you think a counter offer that high would actually be entertained? First time going through this with a big co.
How badly do you want to work at Apple? Sounds like you’re fairly happy at your current job so you don’t have that much to lose right? I don’t know what the salary bands are but in California if you ask the recruiter they have to tell you. I think most SWE in Bay Area with 9+ year in FANG are at 300-400k TC
You lost your leverage because you told them your base and you have no other offers. Now the only thing they have to beat is your base or you have to really negotiate and be prepared to bluff walking away and they not being able to call your bluff. Or get another offer quickly.
I really am prepared to walk away because while I want this position, I also do like my current job, but yeah I think this is the only leverage I have left. If it doesn't work, at least I'm still in a good position and lesson learned for next time.
What kinda algos did you have to do? I have an interview next week for same title

Heard congress distributing wealth
You say you live in NorthEast; how's your the cost of living where you're today in comparison to SFBA?
Rent is going to increase significantly, everything else is similar. That's my main issue with the base, but technically the bonus will cover the difference. Plus my current equity, while very generous, is only options and I'm not sure how to compare that RSUs that have immediately value upon vesting.
