No PIPs
From what I know, it depends on managers. It may not aggressively pip, but your manager can pip you if they don’t like you, even without fair grounds. Which seems to be a bit harder to do at other companies where HR is more involved.
As a past amazon employee, I can easily say this comment is spot on! My manager got personal with me and from somewhere I just got to know he’s about to document my “dev plan”. I immediately resigned as I didn’t want to go through that bullshit. I tried everything possible, changing my role, changing my team within same role, talking with HR, transferring to different country. What I didn’t know all my efforts are going against me as my manager was giving bad feedback about me and ruining my reputation that I built with real hard work. All because I questioned some of his decision and he didn’t like it. Amazon has given your immediate manager immense power. Nothing, absolutely nothing that you can do without getting pass him/her. This is not as open culture as described by “marketing” (I’ll rate google much better place to work in that sense). If you ever go to HR and say anything negative about your manager, start counting your days!
100% here too
I have seen a person got pip and laid off in a neighbor team.
Which org?
Every company Pips bottom performers every year even google
At morgan, they just reorg and show them out, no PIP
Reorg every year?
It happens. I don’t think it’s really aggressive though. You have to definitely deserve it.
Yeah I think apple calls is documented coaching. Basically only happens if the manager does not like you and wants you to quit. You have to really fuck it up to be in this position. People don't get fired, your life just becomes so hard that you quit. Seen it happen. Very sad.
What is PIP ?
Indirectly, I have 2 experience with people going on PIP. One girl did her 30 days, followed all guidelines and still works to this day 3 years later. The second, is less fortunate- but he can only blame himself. Based on a recent experience with a friend of mine - who messed up over and over again, the manager who is also someone I happen to know very well - worked with Apple HR. To my surprise - Apple HR went above and beyond to protect an employee and claimed that they have 50% rate where employees on PIP turn around (which is unheard of and a really good number). The manager was also surprised by how employee sided the HR Team was. His previous experience with many other companies when he would go through PIP for his employee was more of formality thing and a 30 day notice. Either way, while on PIP my friend messed up in major way yet again - and they still followed all the guidelines and let him complete his 30 days - even though he was a liability at that point. The exit was well handled and graceful. Kudos to Apple HR and a big surprise for most people I know.
Like Amazon? 😷
Why Amazon does not PIP? It PIP badly and randomly like shit
