Has anyone faced this issue before? Apple gave a verbal offer (including all the comp details) for a HW engineering role, but eventually did not give a real offer - reason given is the offer didn’t get approve by a top executive. Puzzled over what could be the reason. Any ideas? Thanks.
Could be that they changed their mind and preferred another candidate
I was being told that there was no other candidate and the hiring manager really wanted to hire me.
I’ve heard this happen before but oddly enough only with Apple.
I had the similar situation 2 weeks ago. Got an ICT 4 Technical Product Manager offer. Recruiter said feedback was positive, gave me numbers that are good but still not competing with my other offer from Amazon. I told recruiter I would accept the offer because I thought the team was good. This is for Apple Media Products Data Science team. The hiring manager called me the next day to congratulate me. The hiring manager told me that the director of the team liked me as well. The next day I formally sent an e-mail to recruiter stating that I would be accepting the offer and that I liked the offer. The recruiter said he will get it in official offer letter. 3 days goes by and recruiter sent me an email saying the VP didn’t approve the offer as the VP thought the offer numbers they provided are too competitive for my YoE. Now I have almost 3 YoE. Amazon offered me 265k TC. Apple offered me 215k TC. My current TC is 200k. While the hiring manager thought I am really good and that I am worth 215K TC, the director who interviewed me thought the same, the team members thought I am really valuable, the VP didn’t. Irony here is, the VP didn’t even interview me, I had scheduled interview with VP when I went onsite but the VP not only didn’t show up but didn’t respond to hiring manager or recruiter when they called him from my interview room. So yes, this happened in my situation. I realized that the VP lacked some good skills and didn’t want to work under him. So I responded back to recruiter saying that it is disappointing to see Apple couldn’t compete and also made judgements from a person who never talked to me or interviewed me. I’m finally joining Amazon. I have cleared Google HC but the team match didn’t happen in time for my Amazon’s offer due date. My other competing offers are from Microsoft, Zillow, Hulu, Adobe. I realized I would never join AMP Data Science and business analytics team.
Apple needs VP approvals on all hires / comp. until HR gets that (and you verbally accept) you won’t get a written offer. Before HR will even send it up to the VP they want a verbal acceptance. In my case I negotiated with HR, they sent that to the comp committee or whatever it’s called, offer came back a little different, we renegotiated and it went to comp committee who approved. HR got final acceptance from my and then sent it to the VPwho approved. Written offer was then sent over.
lol this is so strange. VP not approving to Hiring managers decision? This is a slap on HM's face and being unprofessional to interview candidates.
Could you elaborate on the rough overall timeline with all the back and forth and approvals, till you received the written offer? I’m in a similar situation right now.

They would never confirm a verbal offer over email.
