Hi. A contracting firm reached out to me today. Asking to get me in for $75/hour at Apple Cupertino for HW System Eng role. I have 12 YOE in HWE +PhD. Can you guys believe? Apple dropping the bar for pay and hunting talent for cheap pay? Qualcomm way? I know they pay very well for regular employees. Also why should anyone leave full time job for such a pay and contract! Apple please do not damage your reputation.

Apple has been hiring massive amounts of Indian contractors for ages, like the rest of FANG.

Ironically, these contracting middle man firms have all Indian recruiters. My bad i made a profile on Dice long time ago.

      Yep,
They offer them $50-70, no benefits and charge Apple twice more.

Not sure what are the benefits for the company, besides to kick out contractors much easier than FTE employees.

This is how it works - the Indian recruiting firm will quote $75 an hour then after you accept they will come up with some excuse to reduce it to $45. Happened to me. I was initially willing to consider it because Apple/Google often do contract-to-hire. Stay away.

Yeah. But Apple was famous on good pay. Now this. Doesn't make sense. Unless we are unemployed already. Who wants to be contractor? Cannot attract talent like that.

Maybe not you, but someone else who doesn't have a better option is going to sign up and they will get some work out of him/her. That's why it's called a job market.

Yeah but business model wise this doesn't sound right. Just to rampup someone new takes 3 months the least. What would they get out of that Engineers for the rest of the 9 mo contract.

There is so much work to do: setup regression, chase bugs, fix small code, etc. Its not hard to get value out of people if they can code a little.

Lot of contractors I have met don’t want to be full time. Your view is very different from theirs but doesn’t make them wrong. It’s personal choice with justifications which seem okay to them. Don’t fret on it.

I thought the same for a similar contracting position @ Apple. So I went into the interview with some confidence and carefree attitude. I knew they weren’t going to be able to meet my demands so I viewed it as practice. And I was willing and able to walk away from that offer. Turns out the team really liked me, directly contacted me a month later and I got a FTE position. So you never know 😉

My friend dropped out of college and Walmart labs pays him 67.50$ an hour for entry level react development as a contractor. That pay seems low for phd and 8yoe

Yeah. Why would Apple need middle man (the scavenger contractor firms) to get contractors? Can't they find people who would contract for them directly?
