Which company has better compensation and overall growth?

Just received an offer from both companies in hardware org.

Apple
ICT3
Base: 150k
RSU: 105k / 4 years

Nvidia
IC4
Base: 160k
RSU: 340 shares / 4 years
Signing bonus is 5k more than Apple.

YOE: MS + 8 years (but only 5 years are relevant to both roles)

    Apple is better. Here's why:

Nvidia gets engineers with a higher base, but they barely increase the base or stock refreshers every year. Expect a 3 to 5k increase in base a year and maybe 60 more shares of stock refreshers a year. Not exactly great. By working at Apple you can easily overtake the Nvidia compensation in a couple of years. If Nvidia hr cucks won't budge on the offer then tell them to go fuck themselves. Apple will appreciate your hard work better compensation wise.

Congratulations on both offers though. Your Apple one looks solid 👍

Is it $340k RSUs or 340 RSU units at nvidia?

Just updated the post. This is 340 RSU units.

AAPL - lots of perks if those interest u, brand name, solid financials, not too much workload in HW, RSU refreshers are the best in industry

WLB isn’t great for some groups at nvidia either.
      Aug 18, 2018
    • Apple Yupp!
Which group are you talking about, most of the HW teams have the worst WLB
      Aug 18, 2018

Speak for your self. Work load definitely more at Apple

My friend and me had similar offers. He joined apple, I joined Nvidia. He got a 125K refresher, I got a 40K refresher

      wow! Ict3 can get 125k

Well, I'm not a fanboy and would probably head to Google or FB from here to make up for income. You need to ask yourself if money is your motivation

My plan is to eventually go work for Google/FB so I'm hoping Apple would open doors for me. I'm not sure whether the skills I would get at Nvidia would help me get to Google/FB. The role at Apple is in the engineering side but for Nvidia it's in the operation side.

Nv offer looks good. They don’t offer ic4 easily for <8 yrs or at least they did not back in the day. Did they negotiate at all ?
    Aug 22, 2018 4
    • Intel alikimchi
      OP
They didn't negotiate at all. They gave me an offer and said this is it "we don't try and compete with companies like Amazon/Apple/Google."
      Aug 22, 2018
    • Nvidia nvrtx
Then please let them know on our behalf as well as if you don't compete with them but pay more is fine, but if you pay less then employees will prefer to go to Amazon Apple Google

Well that seems typical of Nv and hence the question. Seems like you have a good idea on which way to go by now :). Good luck

Nvidia looks like they're a vastly better offer here... 176.25k from Apple, versus 245k from Nvidia. Plus that better signing bonus at nvidia
    Aug 17, 2018 3
    • Microsoft / Eng Choms
      It's 340 units not 340k RSU
      Aug 17, 2018
    • Salesforce jfuenhdn
      Ah, then at $244/share it's 85.4k over 4 years.

      So 181.35k at Nvida + 25k signing.
      Versus 176.25k Apple + 20k signing.

Okay yeah that makes it tougher to call. Nvidia had insane last couple years due to Bitcoin craze, but I expect that to die down. Apple is a solid company but have honestly been mediocre growth recently, but will be less subject to wilder swings.

If you're young or not tied down by family and responsibilities I'd go with Nvidia. If you want more stable and consistent I'd go with Apple

I'm changing my vote to Apple based on other testimony in this thread. The generous Apple RSU refreshes are the things that convinced me.

I worry about Nvidia going down a lot. What’s awesome about them is that basically anyone doing machine learning was dependent on them. They had long wait times because of such high demand and the bitcoin craze made it even higher demand. The Street pushed the stock up and up. Then crypto came down, google talked about tpu’s, folks like Uber built their own chips, amd is trying to inch in. I’m betting amazon will just make their own silicone soon. Then again most people aren’t joining a company for a lifetime so just go wherever leads to more opportunities.

Normally initial offers from both are quite similar for senikrs, but refreshers are much better at apple.

RSU refreshers is much higher at Apple. I have worked both at Apple and Nvidia; barely got any refreshers at NVidia and there wasn’t any cash bonus either. But this was a while (5+ years) back and things might have changed in NVidia.

Don’t know myself directly but heard high ICT3 performers can get more RSUs than ICT4

Does Apple provide cash bonus? What range?
      Aug 21, 2018

Negotiate NV offer - they will raise to add 25k sign-on second year.
    Try to pull more RSUs.
This will be the best you'd get, even if you're TC (top contributor) perf rewards will be bad. Unfortunately it's how NV works, best you get at joining.

Nvidia processors provide the guts of ML and can be in hyper-demand if ML takes off big. That's a niche where even Apple will depend on them short term.

You'll be fine with either pick!

If ur a high performer probably better at Apple as the top performers get huge refreshers

    Apple.

Similar 1st year numbers. But its ICT3 vs ict4.
    Refreshers at Apple higher
    Nvidia growth will slow down
    Apple better brand than nvidia.

Nvidia stock grew so well the last few years. So multiply the 25k or so with 10 or 20. Imagine how much money that will be?

This assumes it will grow 10 or 20x in the next few years. Past performance is not an indicator of the future.
