I got offers for both companies. Here are the numbers: 6 yoe Uber: 175k base 11k RSUs (it depends who you ask but many funds value them between 40 and 60 per unit) new hire grant 50k sign on Apple: 165k base 100k in RSUs new hire grant 30k sign up bonus There is no doubt that Uber had changed the way we commute and it still have room to grow. On the other hand who knows when I will be able to cash out those RSUs. Apple on the other hand is a solid company is not going away anytime soon. And I love their products. Both teams create the same level of excitement in me. Is it fair just to compare the numbers? What intuition do you all use to take a decision like this? Edit: Adding more data. Both are general (not very specialized) positions. Both are in senior web dev role. The location is in the Bay area.
Location? The Bay Area is expensive af compared to Seattle.
Both are in the bay area
roles? general swe or specialized ones?
Which level at Uber?
Pretty general I will say. Senior web dev.
If itās senior web dev, definitely go with Uber. There is amazing stuff happening in the data viz area and other places. Facebook and Google are the only two other places doing comparatively interesting work for this role.
Really good point! I appreciate the input!
Iāve worked for both. Very different cultures. Apple was more āprofessionalā and hierarchical. Uber is more bottoms-up from engineering and collaborative, with much less direction. Your Uber offer seems way higher though, and thereās a better promotion process than Apple imo. So Iād take Uber.
I recently switched from Apple to Uber and this is the best career decision I have ever taken. Although Apple was super comfortable life but growth and learning curve was super slow. Uber is latest tech, fast paced, feels more energetic and exciting. I would suggest take Uber, you wonāt regret it. Message me directly for any questions.
Iāve heard Apple is easy and comfortable from people in all orgs, but obviously Uber is more impactful or exciting work
Uber.
I would take Apple, Uber valuation seems lofty and like you said, itās paper money.
What do you think I a good valuation?
It was $36 most recently, wasnāt it?
