Applied Materials- nothing but bare truth

Applied Material LMgC02

there is a lot of info about IT company in Blind but not so much about equipment hardware company like amat. so here it is:
the company has these divisions- MDP, FEP, DSM, CMP, APTD, DDP, AGS and CTO group.

MDP, CMP, FEP are stagnant divisions where you would just keep doing what you do for next 6-7 years.. for process engineer, you are like a glorified technician or a lab rat running wafers night/day and weekends. All you will get is thank you emails but no promtions.
there is rarely any promtion unless you are a super favorite of your manager. Nepotism is given to tambram or native asian for promotions. for
others they are made to take a test!!! which has 30% weightage!!
even if promoted after years from E3 to E4, you get a 6-8% raise which is nothing compared to inflation of rents in bay area and cost of living.

DDP/DSM: highest attrition rate.. dont even think to come here as NCG unless you are joining this company for immigration reasons. I feel
sorry for Indians as they dont have any hope of getting their immigration for next 10 years atleast. in that case, look for any positions which does not entail you to go to a lab.. you may be able to survive then..

APTD/CTO: get ready to prepare weekly updates for GM in addition to doing all your regular work..

Most of HW jobs will go to Asia, once the Chinese firms know how to do your work, don’t expect any reasonable pay here. My colleagues always joke about HW job TC will equal to cabbage price once the Chinese know how to make good chips.

LMgCO2, if you know there is no future there. Why are you staying? Why don’t you change?

      OP
Its not that easy to change in h/w field with immigration issues these days.. but i want the information available to new grads so atleast they know what are they signing up for. There is so much info about software companies but very less info about hardware/equipmemt companies in bay area.. many people realize it after they joined and i have seen them regretting their decision.. trying to help them with some basic information so they know what they are signing up for

Glad to see some info about Applied here. Lam is slightly better both for advancement opportunities and work life balance. It seems that the right decision for most people would be to not enter this business. With increased international competition (from Asian engineers who can work even more!) and the increasing difficulties in advancing semiconductor manufacturing technology, I don't think things will get any better. The lower-hanging fruit seems to be in software these days.

I agree with you on this tJiF88.. industry is already at 5nm (same as dna) for production.. next inflection is 2 or 3nm which is same as human DNA diameter.. if we can make anything smaller than that we become higher than the one who created humans .. some spiritual thoughts to ponder about

Thanks for sharing. Yeah, AMAT is sort of not having much insider info on the forum.

What are all the levels at AMAT for engineer?
    Oct 15 1
    • Applied Material LMgC02
      OP
Levels are E1, E2, E3 ( entry level given to phd), E3 senior (for folks coming from outide with 3-7 years of exp, E4 or M4 ( depending upon if u want to go technical or become manager), E5/M5, director/E6, senior director, MD, VP and GM

Thank you for sharing.. sometime people forgot semi companies are the "real silicon" valley companies. More sharing for semi needed than keep glorifying SW TC. :)

Depends on the level but i have heard people getting 30-40% raise easily when they go to apple.. the perks are way way better at apple.. but thats the difference in being a part of lower link in food chain.. we make tools for chipmakers which then sells those chis to apple.. so we are almost at bottom of this food chain

How does Lam rack up against this ? Does it have a better or similar culture ?
      Nov 5
    • Applied Material LMgC02
      OP
Work culture and pay is similar.. one difference is lam does not suffer yet from internal competition as it has one division so as to say. Amat has divisions competing internally for market share so information sharing/learnings is very restricted

Yes, hw jobs are getting shipped overseas. Definitely manufacturing is mostly out there, followed by circuit design automation, and then other sw roles for hw companies.

I hope folks realize that shipping coding jobs overseas is even easier — there is actually nothing to ship 🤷🏻‍♂️

They did back in the early 2000s. The HW jobs were staying behind here. Then in 2014 or so the cloud and startup boom suddenly created a huge demand outpacing the amount of software jobs going offshore.
      Oct 16
    • TI / Product ucc
Yup. I started university in the early 2000s and went the HW route because the advice was that SW jobs were gonna get commoditized, and also that it is easier to switch from HW to SW later on than the other way around.

Is there good growth in APTD group?
    Oct 15 2

      OP
The culture is better in aptd as its a very small group and very lean managed. But a concern is you directly are required to update GM every two weeks so the pressure is very high .. majority time goes in doing work and remaining nights will go in preparing slides so Gen mgr does not insult you in front of everyone

My coworker just jumped to Lam after 9 years' hard work in AMAT. Got >40% base raise and doubled TC. The Lam HR was even amazed by his current low salary base. I'd say Lam values experienced engineer more than AMAT.
