Applying backend engineer position without experience

I’m wondering Airbnb only hire backend engineers with exactly matched experience.
Actually, I just got rejected from another unicorn company. The recruiter told me I did coding and system design interviews well but the hiring manager concerned that I don’t have any backend server or distributed experiences.
My background is mostly OS Kernel, desktop windows application for more than 10 years and iOS/Android app development for couple of years.
Even though I’m not a server oriented, I have designed Skype or Facebook messenger like systems without Hadoop or Kafka like open sources( since it was long time ago, there was not much open source I could use.)

I’m planning to apply Airbnb when their Seattle office hires but, if they are only interested in the candidates with exactly matched experience, I should give up now and thinking about moving to Azure team or something.

Your background is still strong enough to be leveraged in backend teams

It doesn’t matter clear your interviews and you will make it eventually to any teams

There’s a wide range, you can find somewhere that’s a good match. Just have to be willing to learn fast.

IMO the bigger issue will be the adaption to a super fast paced environment.

I don't think you need to have exactly matched experience. When you join Airbnb, the first 3 weeks are bootcamp, where you basically get to choose your team as long as the team has headcount. Most of the teams I talked to didn't seem to care that I didn't have experience, although I was a new grad so they might have had lower standards.

Also I'm pretty sure the Seattle office is hiring now. I met several new hires in the past couple months from Microsoft who are now in the Seattle office. I think you might still have to interview in SF but you can tell your recruiter you want to work in Seattle.

Airbnb sucks in this. Afaik they really want a perfect match. Applied for few jobs in last 3 years. Never got a call from recruiter. Even a referral couldn't get me a call.
