I was keen to apply for the backend developer position at Hubspot Dublin. I have 5+ years of working experience, worked on multiple technologies and have won 7 Innovation awards till now. But when I applied at Hubspot , I was not even given a chance to interview. The recruiter told me that you don't have enough experience in Java. Strangely the JD says, the company is flexible with technology and need a person who is technology agnostic. I somehow feel it is very unfair. Is there any way I can apply and atleast get a chance to interview?
I understand, but Java is not completely new to me. I have worked a bit on Java. Also I have worked extensively on C# too which has very similar syntax as Java. Also catching up with Java will not take much time. The role was posted as Senior Engineer.
Yeah, you’d have better luck applying for a non-Senior role and working towards a promotion once hired. I’d also recommend building some open source projects using pieces of the Hubspot tech stack (check product.hubspot.com/blog for details) to demonstrate competency. You’ll have better chances of getting an interview. The problem is the interview process isn’t really focused on java competency but general engineering. So you may pass the interview but fail at the actual job.
I don’t think the advice from the other HubSpotter in this thread is right. We regularly bring in folks to senior positions without prior Java experience, but sometimes we do a code screen before having an on-site interview. If you DM me your name/email I’m happy to take a look.

What tier is Snowflake?
Despite what the job description says, you need to know java fairly well because that’s what ~90% of the backend stack is written in. Was the role posted as Engineer or Senior Engineer?
