I had recently interviewed with Amazon for a Sr. BIE role but was offered a Business Analyst role instead and so declined the offer. The recruiter mentioned that they would only consider me for a L5 BA role and I could not apply for a L6 Sr. BIE role until next year with this or any other team as the hiring bar is the same across all teams. My questions are:- Is it true that I cannot apply for the L6 Sr BIE role in other teams? What would happen if I did apply for the L6 Sr BIE role? Would the recruiter be able to see my previous interview history and choose not to move forward. Appreciate any insight from current /previous Amazon employees, recruiters and bar raisers.
yes, recruiter can see all your application history thus won't move forward.
All of Amazon departments use the same software for recruiting, so regardless of which team you apply for, the recruiter would see all jobs applied to and the various stages of applications including feedback of previous interviews which is tracked. You can apply to other L6 roles, but chances are slim to get through to an interview based on the feedback of the one where they leveled you as an L5
Sounds like you were down leveled or your BIE skills lacked which led to the downlevel and move from BIE to BA. You can apply to roles as you see fit but I would review your feedback, laugh because you could've made the move internally, then recycle you because you were already assessed and deemed to not be above bar.
Could you explain what you mean by ""then recycle you because you were already assessed and deemed to not be above bar."" The only skills they assessed for me was SQL. There was no Python or system design so would other L6 positions recruiters be able to see this in the system? Also, how difficult is it to switch from a BA role to a BIE role and usually how long does one have to be with a team before they can make the switch? Finally, would you recommend someone with 13 + years of experience to accept a L5 position?
Idk about difficulty. Amazon is what you make of it. If you come in and learn from other BIEs and become proficient with Quicksight then transfer. You can switch your very first day of you wanted to but its not recommended. I dont care about levels or titles so I'm probably the wrong guy to ask. I care about money so if L5 pays more then yeah I would consider it because then I'd bust my ass for L6 in a year or 2 and get even more money. I'd be a part time janitor if it paid 120 so my standards are low.
