I have heard that this is possible, but is it true? I am considering interviewing with Uber but the recruiter in their NYC office says that they are only hiring senior employees in NYC and is asking if I would be open to working in SF. To be honest I don't really like SF (shitty dating scene for men/women don't want to date tech guys/lopsided gender ratio/smelly and disgusting/overpriced and can't live in city), but I would be open to it if I could transfer to NyC in 6 months, would that be possible? I have 1 year of exp not including internships
Uber makes transfers easy but look to transfer after 1 year. That way atleast you will learn something in your SF team.
Is it not possible to do it earlier?
If and only if both managers approve
With the new mobility programs I wouldn’t count on a move in 6 months
What about the new mobility program makes it difficult? Should I not count on being able to transfer?
Well as with any growing company there is more red tape then there used to be. You may be able to get the transfer in 6 but if you aren’t willing to possibly wait until closer to your 1 year it might not be a good idea. I believe the new guidelines require a year before any promo/transfer
New transfer policy requires at least one year for location change.
Op, plan on 1 year. It’s best in terms of transfer as well as you will learn something in your SF team. And who knows you will start liking SF.
A lot of the posters here seem to be confused about the new transfer rules, which are actually very clearly described on our internal job board, where you can look for new teams in a web UI. Basically, there are three types of transfers: team change, location change, role change. Team change its going from one manager to another, in the same location (all SF and Palo Alto teams count as the same location). You can team change at any time if you're not on a PIP, but 6 months with your current team is encouraged. Location change is what you're looking for. Say, going from SF to NYC. You can do this after 1 year in your current role (e.g., software engineer, not necessarily the same team). Role change is the last option, which requires a formal interview process and comp negotiation (e.g., software engineer to product manager). Transferring every year or so is now encouraged to promote knowledge sharing and employee retention, so don't feel bad about wanting to transfer. Just bear in mind that SF and Pittsburgh still have the most exciting tech teams.

Are we ready to buy our forever home?
How do you really feel about SF
I don't really see myself staying there long term, I'd rather go to NYC for long term
I'm kind of torn cause Uber is a good company but SF seems bad..
