Are folks grown up in Seattle shorter, due to lack of sunshine?

Joined MSFT and moved to Seattle about a year ago. Just went through the first winter, horrible! Without sunshine, how can kids grow tall?

Vitamin D supplement?

Amazon broke&dumb May 12, 2019

That's why the further North you go, the less melanin the native skin has, so it absorbs more sunlight. If you're an immigrant, take vitamin D supplements, almost everyone does.

VMware lmbgggtyr May 12, 2019

Are you implying all immigrants are black / brown. Immigrants from north especially Europe (most us population is European ancestry) will need the supplement as well.

Amazon broke&dumb May 12, 2019

Well, everyone I know, of any color, is on vitamin D supplements here. Because we spend so much time indoors, and wear clothes when we're outdoors, that there's really no sunlight making it to our skins. The people with lighter skin are more efficient with using whatever little sunlight the skin can get, but they also get sunburned quickly and are more prone to skin cancer, the most common cancer, so they tend to apply sunscreen all the time, which means they need as much vitamin D supplements as the people with darker skin.

Sunshine is not a huge factor. The Netherlands is just as overcast and they're among the tallest people anywhere

They may be even taller if they grew up in more sunlight 🤔

This doesn’t make any sense, if it was true people from India would’ve evolved to be taller than people from Western Europe. Seattle btw has 2200 hours of sun per year. This is way higher than any capital city in Western Europe.

I think you mean Northern Europe

Then why is a universal depression issue?

Nvidia showeridea May 12, 2019

Yeah, what is this poll even about...

Intel babubhatt May 12, 2019

I think you’re thinking about plants...

The plants are ridiculously tall here in Seattle too. Especially the trees.

Kaspersky Lab aye dais May 12, 2019

World tallest countries are Netherlands, Denmark and Norway. I guess people are like trees, the less sun they get, the taller they are trying to grow to get more :) But anyway vitamin d and calcium are known to humanity for more than hundred years.

Facebook lachaim May 12, 2019

It’s mostly genetics. Although anecdotally I’ve noticed people from NYC tend to be really tall compared with folks from the west coast.

Thermo Fisher zeussical May 12, 2019

Well, since people aren’t plants it has no effect. Genetics and diet play the largest factors.

Thermo Fisher zeussical May 12, 2019

And some depressed people eat more so no correlation.

Don’t know about height but depressed for sure
