Are folks grown up in Seattle shorter, due to lack of sunshine?

Joined MSFT and moved to Seattle about a year ago. Just went through the first winter, horrible!

Without sunshine, how can kids grow tall?

That's why the further North you go, the less melanin the native skin has, so it absorbs more sunlight.
If you're an immigrant, take vitamin D supplements, almost everyone does.

Most likely . But still amazon is not 80 % of US and 100% of humans need sunlight.

He is probably thinking the black / brown are only immigrants and forgot that Europeans are also immigrants. They just get their green cards quicker. Moreover, a lot of employees at amazon are Asians so s/he is not thinking that their is a world outside amazon.

Just FYI, apart from the big cities/ tech hubs like the Bay Area , Seattle, nyc , Boston, Chicago etc. you will only find Europeans. You will barely find south Asians there.

Good logic vmware! But cut some slack to Amazon. You are getting offended for a seemingly minor mistake.

Hey VMware, it wasn't 'the white people' that coined this term but most likely 'some people that might have been also white'

Sunshine is not a huge factor. The Netherlands is just as overcast and they're among the tallest people anywhere

They may be even taller if they grew up in more sunlight 🤔

I think you’re thinking about plants...

The plants are ridiculously tall here in Seattle too. Especially the trees.

This doesn’t make any sense, if it was true people from India would’ve evolved to be taller than people from Western Europe.
Seattle btw has 2200 hours of sun per year. This is way higher than any capital city in Western Europe.

Then why is a universal depression issue?

The sunny hours are very disproportionately during the summer when the days are long. It is sunny from 6am to 9pm, then from Nov to March the days are short and gloomy, this is the tough period. It is not as worse as in the Nordic countries though.

Yeah, I meant everything north of Paris :) Spain is Western Europe, but we could agree it is very sunny.

Well, since people aren’t plants it has no effect. Genetics and diet play the largest factors.

And some depressed people eat more so no correlation.

World tallest countries are Netherlands, Denmark and Norway. I guess people are like trees, the less sun they get, the taller they are trying to grow to get more :)
But anyway vitamin d and calcium are known to humanity for more than hundred years.

I get more sunlight in Seattle than I did anywhere else that I’ve lived. Because it’s rarely too hot or too cold to go outside.

    • Uber / Other Hjkrdhk
Yeah, the climate is moderate and going outside is always possible.

It’s mostly genetics. Although anecdotally I’ve noticed people from NYC tend to be really tall compared with folks from the west coast.
