Are most of the people in blind from Bay area?

I see a lot of 300k+ TCs here in blind. And some people even go to the extent to say that it is lower for a SDE with 5 yoe. What bothers me is, I live in the tri-state area (NJ/NY/PA) and here anything above $150k is a very comfortable salary for anyone with 5 yoe. I understand that there is a difference in COL between east coast and Bay area. But is the COL the only big factor for this difference? I have an offer from Facebook NY office - TC - 220k

I assure you, most of the users on blind are not making over $300k. The ones who are, wanna flex, which is fine. But that's why they mention their pay more and the people making less mention their pay less often.

Yeah, people who make over $300k feel they have to post it everywhere they can. TC 299k / 2 yoe

Facebook huawd Jun 19, 2019

This. Most people dont make that pay, even in Bay area and even in tech.

Cost of competition is huge. Lots of companies with big cash flow ready to dump cash on new hires in the bay area. NYC should be close if you get in at top companies. In general the bay area, NYC, Seattle, Austin, boston, are your best bets.

I got into Facebook in NYC. I have 5 yoe. But what I'm offered is lesser than what someone with 2 yoe said they get paid. Mind it I'm not saying that my pay is less. Personally I feel it is a lot. That's why I'm confused

They could be lucky, have more education, or lying. 300k is attainable for you with competing offers

NYC comp outside of selected Companies is sub 200k in most cases.

Do you have 5 YOE?

Trimble YjiM70 OP Jun 19, 2019

Yes

Rally Health Conan99 Jun 19, 2019

Depending on your title/level I think. I donā€™t think years of experience really matter that much. Iā€™ve interviewed someone with 10 yoe but at the same level of new hires

SDE L4

Trimble YjiM70 OP Jun 19, 2019

I can assure you that even the best developers here make about $250-300k and they are content with that because it is considered a very competitive pay

And I thought NYC is a premium market just like Bay Area!

Amazon HHWN63 Jun 19, 2019

Kind of sad. FB usually gives great offers. 220K is not a great offer for L4.

Trimble YjiM70 OP Jun 19, 2019

This is the kind of comment that made me post this question. It is not sad. It is a very good compensation. It's about right for L4 position here.

Amazon HHWN63 Jun 19, 2019

And FB apparently doesn't bother with location based adjustments.

Housing costs are insane if you want to own a home

NYC companies for the most part seem to low ball a little compared to SF outside a select club that is willing to beat FAANG numbers by a decent amount, but I would never say 150k is comfortable here...

Trimble YjiM70 OP Jun 19, 2019

What would you say is comfortable if you are living in Brooklyn or Jersey City and work in Manhattan? And your food and transport expense on workdays are covered by the company

Goldman Sachs fake engineer Jun 19, 2019

Living in NJ does not cut your expenses down compared to cheaper parts of Manhattan, it only lowers your tax bill. If you're willing to go out to journal square sure, but if you spend a few minutes there I think you'll understand why people don't want to live there. I'm in downtown Hoboken which I think is a nice balance between convenience and affordability. I spend way more money here than I did in SF. Part of that is because I don't have roommates, but in SF the apartments are actually big enough to have multiple people living comfortably for the same money. Eating out is more expensive, transportation is more expensive, basically every service is more expensive, every store is marked up more, and real estate is more expensive per square foot. Obviously it depends on how much money you try to save. Lots of people live comfortably on 80k, but save nothing. I would say that as a young person, most of my friends make 220 or more in PE or software, so to not feel bad about spending money going out with them you also need at least 200k. The tech boom is not going to last forever, so I'm very conservative with money.
