Are there any drawbacks of joining a fairly new and small team at Google vs. a seasoned team such as Adwords API?

I had team fit calls with 3 teams, 2 out of which are fairly new and small teams but are doing very interesting, exciting and innovative work and it aligns with my interests. I am really interested in joining one of these 2 teams and I think I will be get to learn a lot and grow. The third team is well seasoned and big - Adwords API. I just wanted get a general opinion if there are any drawbacks or factors which I should consiser if I choose to join any team of the first two. I am being considered for a SWE role.

If you have crushing amounts of debt to pay down, go with Ads. If your debt is manageable, do what interests you.

From what I gather it's more that impact is easier to show, since there are dollars attached to it (loosely). So you can get promo doing work that in another org/team might not be enough for promo, because of visibility etc.

  • One thing to note is that a new team may have the responsibility of oncall vs a bigger team like AdWords will have SREs so you’ll never have oncall

Oncall has the bonus of getting extra pay, and it's always worth it to me.

    • Yeah, personally I’m fine with it, but it’s definitely something to keep in mind

Small and new = Exciting, uncommon tech stack compared to other Google teams, more ownership of the product, could be disbanded/reorged easily if things don't "pan out" in a few years, harder to justify promo at higher level.

Large and stable = Easier to justify impact for promo, more stable tools, more senior coworkers, less ownership (you might own a small part of a really big system), potentially boring work.

Do the thing you most want to do now. As long as you make a sane decisions, opt for most enjoyment now. Otherwise you’ll go your whole career optimizing for increased probability of happiness later. Let each career step you take be the best option at the time.

Long story short, pick the one you’d regret never working on.

If you are a new grad, start with small and new. More immediate growth and you can shift into AdWords or other monetary projects with more experience

  • Small and new is better if they will grow into big and old, so in the long run you arrive at the same end state.

Have seen big and old get even bigger and older, so look at the growth potential not just current size

Everyone has been claiming that new teams are more exciting, and to some extent that's true since it's greenfield work, but also consider that a lot of infrastructure hasn't been built yet, so there may be a lot of boring work that needs to be done to get to the actual interesting bits.

I would go with the work that interests you. Your comp should be basically the same regardless, and it's generally very easy to move teams after a year or two if you want to try something new. Biggest limitation on team portability is if you're in one of the smaller engineering offices.

Small and new is better since there is no legacy system to maintain
