Are you allowed to publish papers while working at Amazon?

Hi All,

My friend will be interviewing with Amazon, Seattle for the position of Applied Scientist. She is about to finish her phd and is very much interested to pursue her career doing research in the field of ML/AI. She was wondering if there are any teams doing fundamental research in ML/AI at Amazon or if all the work done is revolving their products? Also, do they publish any of their research? I mean, are they even allowed to publish?

Thank you all in advance!

“Correction of error”. A document assigned to, and written by a team as a result of an outage, customer problem, legal issue or security issue.

Do you know about level for Applied Scientist in AWS? Is it L6 or L7? And how's the compensation?

I am aware of the fact that it requires PhD but don't know anyone in that role. Are there any additional perks compared to normal SWEs? And do refresher/bonus work the same way as SWEs?

Thanks for your reply. So my friend is interviewing with some mid-size companies. In couple of them, she is interviewing with teams where they do fundamental research and publish papers. She liked it and was wondering how it would be at Amazon. But from your reply it looks like they don’t do any fundamental research or are allowed to publish it.

Yes you can . I’ve been publishing and our org is encouraged to publish. Just make sure the work is good . Most as and ml work in amazon is taking what google built and using our data on it .

Yes you can publish. We have a very streamlined process. My team has been regularly publishing in ACL, EMNLP and NAACL

    • Seems like you work in an NLP team. How is the onsite process? What should candidate expect? I have an upcoming interview :)

One of the few concepts that amazon does better than most companies. The massive library of COEs, especially for high profile events, is immensely valuable m.

Depends on the team. Decent number of internal publications and a small number reach external journals/conferences. I'd bias to say that for most teams it's not the highest priority.
