After becoming established in your career, receiving promotions and pay raises, what do you do differently in your daily life and what do you do the same? What are some things you still do to control expenses? When you treat yourself, what’s your favorite thing to indulge in?
I live below my means. I do make sure to travel and have a good time, but my spending has not expanded proportionally to my earning.
I make sure I don't get impacted by lifestyle creep.
I wanted to ensure that all my future earnings were spent properly, so I got married and had some kids.
Shop for clothes on clearance rack.. and bought a Range Rover Sport.
I value my time more. I hire people to mow the lawn and clean the house.
This.
Yep
I try to distinguish between need vs want. You can be frugal with needs, like I am still fine buying clothes at the same retailers I did 10nyears ago, but money has indeed helped with the aspirational and want stuff, like travelling and vacations.
For me money is about convinces. Paying people to wash my car, clean house, have a doorman, take an Uber Black. I still buy cheap clothes and shop at discount grocers.
Do you mind sharing why Uber black? (I’ve taken one and it didn’t seem worth for me — May be city specific)
It’s not worth it IMO either. It’s just more roomy, no sharing, and they’re often equip with fun stuff like water bottles, chips, etc. Been in a few with WiFi. Just a convenience. And they’re everywhere here in LA.
I got a better apartment, better furniture, a better car, better apparels, some gadgets, send more money/stuff back home, eat out more often, hired a personal trainer, travel more often to meet friends across the country, get regular massages, tip generously, got someone to shovel the snow off my car in winters, and donate more money to charity.
I’m just as frugal as when I was growing up. For example, I turn off the AC in the zones I don’t occupy. I only have my house cleaner come on weekdays and only let her grocery shop once a week. I winterize the outdoor pool but still use the indoor pool. The most frugal thing I do though is stick with the E class instead of the S.
