Argo AI. How is it?

2.6 billion investment from VW with $1 billion of it in cash. That’s a decent amount of 💵 💵 💵. I thought Aurora was the leader up until now (outside of Waymo). But it looks like with VW pulling out of Aurora and going with Argo AI things are going to change.

People working at Argo AI, how is the company? Is it a good time to consider opportunities there? Any inputs on the engineering culture, wlb etc would be much appreciated.

I think where Aurora wins for now atleast is their talent. They’ve got top notch engineers from Waymo, Tesla, SpaceX and CMU. That counts for a lot. But to win in autonomy you need great partnerships and money too 🤷‍♂️

Take a look at the pedigrees of Argo's talent...

Oh yea I don’t underestimate the talent at Argo AI. But Aurora has many people who’ve defined the autonomous industry and are leaders in it. Not to say that is always the winning formula for success but definitely helps.

Argo has some of the best talent in the industry. They have 3 full time profs working for them. At the mid level most people are from Apple, FB, Google, Cruise etc. These are people who have worked on this problem for many years.

Again I don’t underestimate the talent at Argo AI. But have you seen the people at Aurora

Chris Urmson - Essentially the founder of Waymo
Drew Bagnell - Founding member of Carnegie Robotics
Sterling Anderson - Founding member of Autopilot at Tesla
Jinnah Hosein - VP of software at SpaceX ( This guy is great. Elon loves him)
If there’s an A-team then that is definitely that. All of these are no bs leaders that get the job done.

Looking through the profiles of the engineers, I got the sense that although Argo's median talent is quite strong, Aurora seems like it attracts consistently high caliber backgrounds. Maybe it's a result of Argo being larger of a startup.

I doubt that’ll happen anytime in the next 3-4 years. How can you ipo when you have no revenue and product ready for release. That’s why they are raising so much cash.

Argo is now 7-8 billion dollar evaluation ... Aurora is just 2.7b. It means Argo has much more to show off.

What I gathered VW wanted ownership of IP ... that was main part of the disagreement. If they got deal with VW, they could not do it with FCA apparently. From Aurora point of view it makes thing difficult for them in regards to other car maker deal. Anyone from Aurora confirm or deny?
