As a girl in tech: Which would you pick? Why?

A biotech startup company that IPO'd based in Newport Beach, CA. Would be a director, but no one would have heard of this company. But higher potential for this stock to grow because the product is based on FDA approval, which I (insider) know will pass.

Work on the beach. Sunny all the time. Traffic everywhere.

No other tech companies around if this doesn't work out...

$225k base
25% bonus
$100k yearly stock
TC: $380k

------OR--------

Microsoft in Redmond, WA. Principal Manager on some cool impactful projects with emerging tech.
Work remotely one day a week. Very tech savvy senior team.

Gloomy weather 3-4 months a year. Free drinks. 401k matching. ESPP discounts. Stay Fit. Connector bus.

Lots of tech companies around if Microsoft doesn't work out.

$200k base
40% bonus
$40k yearly stock
TC: $320k

Seattle is 50% women, which is the same as California. Unless you meant “guy heavy” as in too much obese men.

That's not a valid answer to why being a girl is relevant. Do you feel like part of a pack knowing that there are more women or something?

Pick southern CA! You can always go back to a big company if it doesn’t work out. And TC / all else is better. Get apartment close to job / beach to limit traffic exposure.

I mean that's one factor, but a woman in tech has less respect than say in fashion (generalizing here for sure, but some people think like this). So upward mobility, respect, life style, and location. For example a woman working in Delhi could get raped really easily (this is an extreme example) or a woman in Utah at my age is expected to have a family already. Lots of factors at play here.

I would suggest separating the concerns and resolving your original question purely in the optic of career first. Then, either the career stuff and other stuff point toward the same answer and you're done, or else you will have a simpler problem of "is my career worth these other things."

The reason I think this is a sound approach is I doubt your gender will hinder you or particularly aid you in either role.

As far as which to take... Which one do you find yourself thinking about or imagining? Listen to your heart.

CA will have state tax so factor that in.
What you described seem like top ranges for bonus. Not sure if anyone gets the top range.
Weather wise, looks like SOCAL would be better option.
Go to both places, spend a few days at each place and try to get a gut feeling where you would like living more.
Since you mentioned being a girl, it’s likely that you are single and looking for a relationship. Seattle isn’t the best place to date at least it’s my experience as a guy. Not sure about CA. Where are you living currently ?

I can’t offer any gender-specific advice, but based on what you’ve described, the SoCal offer sounds more appealing to me. Better weather, beautiful area, potentially more impact working at a startup vs an established tech giant.

If you work for a no name biotech which has a good product and be there for 3-4 years. That will enable you to do more and you can find a role in tech company. It isn’t difficult. I worked for a bio tech although known name and have worked in tech too. Post that moved to financial industry. Never have had an issue finding a role. Now money is different everywhere and I believe it’s just what you are able to negotiate.

If you go to MS you will be there for a long time and then most likely wouldn’t move or will move to another tech co. If that’s what you want to do you can forget about the bio tech. I personally blv one should do what he/she wants to or likes to and then you can always find a role which pays the bill. It also depends on what stage of life you are at right now? If not married and no kids then bio tech is gonna be more fun. If you are more settled and older then you got to place safer which translates to MS.

      Hope this helps
