I can't stop thinking how much it would make sense to just have a software engineering bar exam. Other professional careers (medical, law) have one, so why not SWE? Even if I had to take a full day sit-down exam twice a year, it would still be preferable to Leetcoding over and over again. Imagine going into an interview with a good bar score and having to only answer system design and culture fit questions. It would be a much more enjoyable experience for everyone involved. What do you think?
There is a business idea right here. Business schools use GMAT scores as a tool to screen applicants. One could create something similar, a centralized clearing house with a score. Each company can do their additional due diligence, but it would make life so much better for everyone!!

Does anyone in the industry actually care about this? From the people Ive seen achieve this, it makes no difference.
I've only seen it at Lockheed. I guess it holds weight when dealing with DOD critical mission stuff but still it's not very common.

No! Then you'll be paying Kaplan and Princeton review to get you prepped for these tests, at least it first. Eventually it should become second nature.
So you want to make software engineering a boring office job? That’s the beauty of the whole field and what attracts the most brilliant geniuses to it. It’s a place where interviewers have the space to creatively evaluate candidates and for engineers to have the chance to demonstrate how their time spent on learning technology X translates to technology Y at this company. Half of the questions I ask at interviews don’t get answered fully. I measure the candidate’s ability to think outside the box and appreciate the thought process. Putting all that in a standardized test will just get people better at succeeding in tests. Just like TOEFL and other tests. An EE having a license doesn’t mean that they are creative.

Computerized written questions. Similar to coding tests, but questions selected by an accredited body, similar to the College Board for college enterance tests. Even a panel made up of distinguished FANG engineers would be a good idea.
