Relatively speaking, Atlassian doesn’t pay that well, TBH (even with the whole compensation readjustment they supposedly went through last year to become more competitive). About half the company is sitting pretty on some fairly stellar RSU returns since the IPO, so maybe that’s part of the reason.

Your current base is higher than what they typically pay for your level and experience. From what I’ve been told, P5 midpoint is around 145k, though there’s obviously stock and bonus to consider as well. They’ll also probably try to sell you on the whole “you might make more somewhere else, but we have better culture” spiel. If only “culture” paid the Bay Area rent...

Some of my data is actually pretty recent, and now I’m thinking that a bunch of us have gotten really shafted. Or that you’re atypical. 3YOE at 160/P5 seems like quite a lot. Did you have multiple offers to negotiate with?

I didn't, but I have specific experience that they found valuable and I guess am known for what I do in that niche? Can't say that with a straight face lol. Worth noting I have friends at P4 making 155 with a fair bit less stock

Yep, that seems like the high end of p4 or possibly even out of band. The ranges can be quite close with the difference being in stock mostly. My guess is think most p5 people are 165-185 depending on experience, with some people in between in the 155-165. My interviewers were on the fence about putting me in P4 or P5 as well fwiw

145k would be very low for P5, not mid band - based on the early 2018 cycle bumps it sounded like 145k was about the P4 midpoint and P5 around 165 or maybe 170.

153k that the OP listes is probably in the overlap territory but pretty low for P5.

Pretty good for P4, wouldn't be that far on the low side for P5. I'm pretty sure that has to be P4 since P5 would be 15% bonus

    Huh.

I got 145k base, 125k stock/4 yrs, and a 15k sign on bonus a few months back for p4 and they said that I’m “borderline p5” (10 yoe and a masters degree) and that it was “a fair offer” so it wasn’t negotiable. I was a little bit “WTF?”, TBH.

Judging by some of the 1st yeat P4 to P5 promotions that were pretty much "duh, how was this person not hired at P5 to begin with" I think we're habitually underleveling.

Well I’ve been at “senior level” for the past 5 years of my career, so I was literally demoted. Their response was that Atlassian’s job levelling is way harder than other places and “everyone gets demoted when they come here”. 🤔 Anyway, I accepted it, so can’t complain too much. I could have walked away. And I’m tempted to sometimes when I read threads like this and feel shitty and like I was lowballed. I’m happy for OP, though.
