Austin....?

Keep hearing every where how Austin is the hot spot for SWE. But where are the interesting jobs at? The only interesting postings I have seen are at Amazon and ARM other than that it seems like just small contracting firms with shitty salaries. Is it really a hot spot or just marketing? Please point me to some interesting companies is Austin.

Are Google or Facebook hiring in Austin though? Haven't seen any openings

Uber sight Sep 10, 2018

Facebook has some eng in Austin, but mostly sales. Google has a few locations in Austin, some a result of acquisitions.

You can work remote for other companies and enjoy Austin’s significantly lower cost of living compared to Bay Area. A friend of mine just moved there to work remote for his existing job

Lockheed Martin iEkO37 OP Sep 10, 2018

Hm interesting. But does that mean you can only work remotely from Austin? I have some other places in mind with better quality of life and similar cost of living in that case.

LinkedIn Hax Sep 10, 2018

Either work remote or find a job there. As others have said in this thread a bunch of companies have offices there.

I live in Dallas. My understanding of Austin is that it is a hot spot, meaning everyone wants to go there and they have too many smart people so their are a low number of positions and pay isn’t as competitive BUT hey, it’s Austin. Where you can keep it weird and get chased by homeless. I think there are a bunch of smaller tech companies there, many of which don’t end up on indeed and dice. Some of the firms I know that have operations there are Dell, Apple, IBM, National Instruments, Oracle, Home Away, Indeed, Amazon, EA Electronic Arts, Facebook, eBay, Silicon Labs, VMware, Pearson, SolarWinds, LegalZoom, Google, Rackspace, Spiceworks, PayPal, Cognizant, Dun & Bradstreet, StitchFix, DrillingInfo (I know the CEO of you need), Tableau, Trendkite, Uber, AthenaHealth, Experian, Salesforce, Dropbox, CA Tech.

Jesus that’s a huge list

Got ya thanks for the detailed response!

Plenty of companies here pay very well. 😊

Nearly every major tech player has some presence in Austin, if not a full satellite office. Re: Salaries, after adjusting for cost of living you’ll be much better off in Austin than the Bay Area. There is something like a 32% difference in cost. Do you can make 25% less and still come out ahead.

Lockheed Martin iEkO37 OP Sep 10, 2018

How's it better than Socal or Denver though. From a job search perspective I've seen more opportunities in those markets.

Uber sight Sep 10, 2018

Denver would be comparable. I don’t think SoCal is. Lots of startups in Austin too. Also home to SXSW.

How do you guys like Austin compared to Seattle?

Procore IisBozo Nov 23, 2021

Seattle: rains nine months out of the year, perfect for two. Better Asian food. Austin: sweltering heat for four months, perfect for four. Better BBQ and TexMex. Lower COL. People are friendlier. I would say that Seattle has more stuff to do outdoors, but less good weather to do it in so it kind of comes out in the wash.

Hoping to move to Austin next fall from Midwest. Fingers crossed...

For a TC of 200k in bay area, how much should I expect to get in Austin for a company like homeaway?

POWER Engineers NtTy44 Jan 20, 2019

Not sure how this works but if I lived off 200k in the Bay Area and were paying for housing I would think 100k is the Austin equivalent, maybe even less. I always thought my $120,000 job would be a $250-300,000 job in the Bay Area of which I would still need to live an hour away from work.

Proofpoint mogamb Mar 16, 2019

Now a days in Austin college grad get 100 k , does it mean u get 200k in bay. That’s wrong calculation

Home Depot and HEB are both heavily investing in digital here in Austin. Could be worth checking. Also, the is a burgeoning startup scene here, so you could try using Angellist and find all kinds of smaller companies doing new things.

How is the pay at HEB?

GQR rec101 May 28, 2019

Opcity is a pretty good option with decent compensation and a solid engineering environment. They are a python, react, AWS shop and have some quality engineers and projects on. Ping roshni.rana@opcity.com and she can point you in the right direction.
