Austin or San Diego

I’m planning to leave the Bay Area, would you rather live in Austin or San Diego?

* Austin
- Better home prices
- Better tech job mobility

* San Diego
- Better weather
- Better policies (e.g. Cannabis)

      Worst, most insane traffic in Austin but super friendly ppl everywhere. Hot, dusty and ugly compared to SD.

      I love SD. If tech was better there, I would definitely live there. Austin is cool, but diversity is lacking.

    Home prices in Texas have to be weighed against the property tax. That being said, if I had to choose, Austin would prob be more fun.
    Apr 8, 2018 2
    • Google blind.io
      OP
      Yes, I’ve seen that property taxes are more expensive in Austin than the Bay Area and San Diego, if you paid off the home, you end up paying more monthly in Austin and it’s because you don’t have state taxes there.

    San Diego is great. I considered moving to Austin and I knew that it's this blue oasis surrounded by well...the rest of Texas. Houses are cheap but the traffic is shit and the weather is even worse. Ultimately, I decided against Austin because I don't want my tax money to go to causes that I don't believe in.

      Apr 8, 2018
    • Rev / Eng HTav22
      Yup, definitely is worse than SD. Austin doesn't have the infrastructure to support the sudden influx of tech workers. The city is doing something about it but things aren't happening fast enough. People already started complaining about the rising cost of rent and the terrible traffic.

      Short commute is a very important factor to me because of family, do you think SD have a better infrastructure or is it just less crowded than Austin?
      Apr 9, 2018
    • New / Other Hioooo
      In both Austin and SD the commute depends where the office is and where you choose to live, as they both span pretty far distances north and south of downtown. Most SD offices are near 5/805 merge, that’s where traffic is worst.

    • Teradata / Eng archxhunta
      San Diego traffic is much, much better than LA, Seattle, or Bay Area. If you’re used to traffic in any of those areas, the worst traffic in SD is comparable to light-medium traffic in any of the other areas

    Difficult for any city to beat San Diego. Awesome weather .great beaches, breweries, outdoor heaven, kaboo music festival...del mar races, SeaWorld, Legoland,and zoo for ppl with kids..If can , do move for couple of years ..move out out if career mobility is low. Give it a try..don't think I have ever heard anyone regret. Lot of talent movement out of Q..so startup scene may heat up

    But if you are young and in tech I’d go to Austin

      My wife and I are planning to have a second child, we both work on tech, so that’s the reason Austin looks like a nice option, but I know San Diego is awesome for families, do you think the tech market will grow in SD?
      Apr 9, 2018
    • Cisco lEcG86
      Austin has grown in tech more than San Diego in the past decade. I would trust Austin to grow more in the next decade too.

      Not much . Qualcomm is the largest employer here. Intuit and Teradata are here. Microsoft/Nokia was here hut they wrapped up their shop a while back. Illumina pays good for SWE. HP was there in Rancho Bernardo ,not sure of they are still there. Bottomline its Qualcomm unless you want to work in small offices. Google has a facility here mostlu for integration work. Irvine and LA are near to SD and have Amazon, Google(Ad team) , Broadcom offices. Thats about it as far as mobility goes.

      edit. Intel has a small office here focussed on 5G development. Pays good for SD region

    There's literally no culture at all in San Diego. Their museum of modern art is the size of a Google microkitchen, and anyone with an ounce of creativity goes to LA. I recommend Austin for housing, cheap good beer, and awesome mini tech hub and culture.

    What did u decide? We had the fortune of living in SD for more than a decade.. now moved to Austin. Austin is definitely better than San Diego from career perspective, home prices and schools. But cant beat SD beauty beaches and weather. SD job scene has worsened with qualcomms downfall. If it was 10 years back i will say san diego.. now i will say Austin by a small margin. Plan to retire in SD :)

      Irvine has small amazon presence.. many small companies (but nit cutting edge tech).. great schools but higher home prices compared to sd.

      Oh btw.. i just saw that u mentioned ur spouse is also in high tech. One disappointing observation... its really tough for both people to land in great satisfying tech jobs (fang) even in Austin... in sd and Irvine its really tough for one person to land in a great job. If both of u are career focussed, bay area is the place to be. We also lived in bay area for some time :)

      SD = easy drive to LA, easy drive to Palm Springs, easy drive to Big Bear / Lake Arrowhead, Baja. So-so drive to Santa Barbara, SF, Mammoth, Vegas. But housing can be really expensive.
