How much is a good salary for Austin startup. Currently in SF with 220K base. Can they match that?
In general, no. FAAG, Indeed, HomeAway, etc can certainly match that. Austin doesn't really have unicorns, though. The startups are quite small and have equity that you should discount 90% and consider it a windfall if it was ever worth anything. In terms of base you will not get $220k at a startup in Austin unless you are the director of engineering or something like that. I'd say after about $150k you will start to get "maybe you aren't a good fit for a startup".
$150k in Austin goes a good bit further than $220k in SF, if not much further given the lack of city and state income tax coupled with a much lower COL. That said, as someone who went to school in Austin and has been involved in both the SV and ATX startup scene, the level of talent and execution you’ll be working with can be frustratingly subpar if you’re used to the upper middle/higher end of SV standards. Austin is a good move if you’re looking for a place to settle down and make a significant lifestyle change—wouldn’t recommend it if you’re looking to grow and learn rapidly from a career perspective.
