I am in Austin and I just passed my interviews for Google for a Product Manager. The recruiter is now asking me for salary expectations in Bay Area rates. Competitive offers for me in Austin are around $210k TC and I don't have to move. (I have one in hand and 2 close to finish) 1) What should I tell her about a TC in Bay terms? 2) How much do I really need for my family of 6 to have a house (it can be a rental) and live a reasonable commute to Mountain view? I am the sole income currently.
I would say with a house 600k TC with 300+ base
With a family of 6 I wouldn't recommend moving to the Bay Area at all. You would need at least a 4br house, which alone will cost 5k+ in places with reasonable commute times (<1hr). Also you will be paying 10% of your income to the state of California and not getting much in return.
Bay Area is such a rat race. I'd recommend staying in Austin especially if you are the sole income earner.
You should ask the other 5 to start working if you want to move and have a decent lifestyle.
everyone eats!
Ask for 600K, they will negotiate you down to 400 probably and then you can decide.
Family of 6? How many incomes? Low millions maybe?
Don't move just live with that you cleared as life is miserable here not only from house prices or commute but also the competition in kids education. Everyone wants to be in best school district or private and kids struggle with too much competition
well said. Rat race at every level.
What did you end up doing OP? Also, per blind etiquette pls share offer numbers :)
500k... With base of at least 200k+
