EDIT: Highlighting that total experience is 7 years, 4 of which are with Amazon since some comments glossed over it. I work for Amazon in Seattle and my 4 years are coming up soon. I m pretty sure I could make more if I leave. The retail layoff news is discouraging so I am starting to collect information beforehand. I am rated top tier in my team (manager told me). Assuming $1300 stock price, year 4 comp is at $246k (ending this year). My total comp in year 5 will be $175k with the refresher and I don't want to take a paycut. I am an SDE2 at Amazon with a total of 7 years of software experience and 2 years of researcher experience before that. I have over 4 years of experience in ML and data science. What would be an appropriate level and comp at other companies in/around Seattle for me?
Btw, E5 @ 350k is possible but you'd have to kill the interview. In reality, average E5 is more like 300k give or take. E6 is 375k to 450k and E7 is 500k+
Also, getting E5 with 4 years is tougher as you'll likely be targeted at E4. Nailing the interview may get you E5 but you'll unlikely see 350k, probably 300k maybe less sice you're 4 years. Typical engineer is expected to reach E5 after 5 years, 4 is fast.
Mentioned in my post, I have 7 years experience, almost 4 of them at Amazon. What would be a good TC for E4 7 years experience including ML in Seattle since that seems to be a certain (to am extent) bet.
Any google, microsoft, or netflix folks want to chime in with what I can realistically expect as my comp if I switch? Also which other companies in Seattle pay well, have good career growth prospects, and are doing well financially?
From an immediate tc pov you can't really beat g or fb. Fb numbers quoted above sound right (~300+) at e5. With 7 years exp e5 should be attainable.
Go for senior at FB. TC approx 350k.
Thanks. Just confirming that this is in Seattle and not CA, right? Also what's the average experience of senior at FB? Is the senior equivalent a L6 at Amazon?
Facebook pays the same in both CA and Seattle. Yes, senior (E5) is L6 (SDE3). You could try but it's not easy to get E5 from SDE2.
