Zero competing offers. Hiring manager really liked me... Anything to do in this boat in terms of ability to negotiate with recruiter when I get the call? My understanding is that it would be a standard offer based on percieved level and interview performance rating... And my understanding is that goog does not budge unless "new info" should be considered (e.g. retention bonus from current employer or competing offer, etc) Appreciate any career advice here (aside from the obvious - "get competing offer")
Current TC? Get another offer..otherwise you don't deserve to negotiate, do you? It'll be take it or leave it.
Been through 100s of hirings over here. It never hurts to ask for 5-10% after the offer, no matter your current or former employment situation. They won’t pull the offer; this is your only opportunity to negotiate pay.
What is your only opportunity to negotiate? After the offer?
Make up a fake counter offer. They compete dirty, why can't you!
Why not? They don’t ever call your bluff
Smaller companies don't. Bigger ones, how would they know unless they have contacts at the other ones.
You can still negotiate without a competing offer (this might depend how bad the initial offer is). But Google offer seems very poor initially that moves to poor/mediocre if you don't have competing offers. Annoying since they are basically forcing you to interview elsewhere in order to pay reasonable comp and it shows they don't trust their own interview evaluation of you.
A bit off topic: I worked as a contractor at google. It helped to drop gay hints at the interview (i mentioned that I took a musical theatre class in school) even though I'm not gay. But I have the technical chops too. It made me truly believe that there's a progressive hiring bias at El Goog.
So lame if this is true
Says the contractor..
Without a compete offer you are at a disadvantage. Google will play the we are google and doing you a favor card. But thinking about it, it’s better than IBM
Interview somewhere fast and get another offer
Dude you work at IBM. Just take the Google offer.
How did it turn out?
