Awesome NY companies (that are not Google or FB)?

Graduating with my masters soon and I’m starting to look at the job market to see if I should switch companies. What are some great NY companies I should be looking at? Uber? Spotify? Etsy? I have about 10 years of experience in various database roles and am getting a masters in Data Science.

I heard Spotify doesn’t pay market.

Spotify HjOl01 Jan 29, 2018

Spotify’s official stance on salary is 75th percentile. Shitty.

Bloomberg drp3 Jan 31, 2018

What are growth opportunities at Spotify like? Is it easy to move up and what are typical raises like?

Lyft

I heard their NYC office only wants senior Candidates tho.. maybe someone from Lyft can confirm this..?

I think Bloomberg is kickass

The tech market is dead there. I just left after 20 years. If you’re in a well-paying gig then you’re fine for now, but those looking are getting crappy offers (if any). Spare me the posts about hedge fund offers for $500K — those few offers are only possible to quant analysts with PhDs in math and expert C++ skills.

Checks out. Getting paid garbo for doing lots

Stay away from RTR

Facebook CRbc25 Jan 29, 2018

What’s that?

RTR = Rent the Runway, I’m guessing

If you want top pay and not finance there’s pretty much only google and FB in NYC. At Spotify you’ll take a pay (both starting and growth) hit, but they do offer European benefits. I’ve heard good things about Lyft but they’re super small in nyc.

Qualcomm void* ptr Jan 29, 2018

Just curious, what are European benefits?

Spotify fksjs Jan 29, 2018

Lots of vacation days (currently 23), flexible public holidays, unlimited sick days, 6 months of parental leave, paid healthcare, relatively consistent work schedules -> in return we get basically cost of living salary increases and very few levels

Etsy UKkm50 Jan 29, 2018

Etsy's hiring aggressively right now, competitive pay and really great benefits. Lyft over Uber for sure.

Amazon Pro2d Jan 29, 2018

Didn’t y’all shit the bed last year and rescind offers?

Etsy UKkm50 Jan 29, 2018

Totally did, it's true. The board replaced the CEO early last year and new leadership cut costs a lot, including a lot of staff and all the offers we had out. Which sucked. But since then, we've had two great earnings calls and stock prices are up again. So hiring is happening again too.

Thanks for all the input. I’d love to work at the Googles and FBs of NY but realistically speaking I don’t think I’d do well right now. Everyone keeps talking about leetcode and studying for months to prep. Between finishing grad school, kids, and my current job... I don’t have time to do much else. The HOPE is that I can move into a great company after school, get some real world experience and finally work on a small number of leetcode then try my luck with Google / FB. It’ll take a few years but it’ll happen eventually. Late to the game compared to the new undergrads but it is what it is.

Facebook CRbc25 Jan 29, 2018

Better to start the leetcode now and work on it gradually
