Worth joining Azure Production Infrastructure Engineering team vs an Amazon Alexa team? I am an SDE. Any thoughts?
Definitely alexa
Though call, very different products. Alexa will get you the end customer touch and product recognition by everyday people. Azure infra will get you into cloud computing hot zone and respect by peer engineers as you will have the background to impress those who know. What are you looking for? In abstract either team have great potential.
Thanks. My major concern is the PIE work seemed a little like SRE work to me. I am not 100% certain though. Wondering if you would know any more about this team?
Find out more about PIE from their manager. But core Azure teams >> Alexa for future job prospects in infrastructure/distributed systems domain if that's what you're looking for.
Thanks! Though PIE team is not core Azure. It basically provides a platform for other Azure teams.
If it is support only and does not work on the actual service, then it sounds like Alexa shopping is a better choice. Support is Azure is a lot of live site and not an enriching experience.
Infra work depends heavily on team. One pro of alexa is that it's very easy to transfer internally ( including to aws ) Alexa teams are generally well regarded technically. And if the right opportunity shows up in AWS you can always transfer with much better internal knowledge of the role.
The Alexa team I am getting is voice shopping. AFAIK that is not core Alexa. Is that correct?
That sounds correct unfortunately not familiar with that team
PIE really depends on the team. You could be building new services for live site support, monitoring etc, or you could be in more of a SRE role for existing stuff. Try to find out what team exactly you're going to join, try to get a contact from that team.
Which one did you end up joining?
@Mocassin$ Which one did you end up joining?
Sounds like Azure infra will be a hell of livesite...
