Currently a Management Information Systems major at a Big East private school. Its been hard for me to come to terms with, but Blind has inspired me to pursue computer science and my ideal job would be a software development engineer. I think my interest in this field far exceeds the passion I have for my current one. By doing one extra semester I could double major in Computer Science and MIS so I’m wondering if you guys suggest this route for what I want to do. I have the funding to finish both degrees (currently in my 5th year and looking at one extra semester to accomplish this) and eventually get a masters at a more technical school debt free if I commit to this route. If I wanna work at FAANG/startup someday or get a good entry level offer will a BA hurt me? Will it look ok because I have a double major? I kinda fear the math/science courses and additional time if I were to get the BS. Sorry about the length of this post... TC: 23/hr (internship) YOE: 0
Do you think if I can LC my ass off nobody will really give a damn? I’m not coming from a top tier tech school but willing to put in the work. Thank you for your comment!
AA plus 6 month coding bootcamp
Kinda new so not familiar with AA unless you are referring to App Academy? Or did you mean a BA and then a 6 month coding boot camp? I kinda like the sound of the later. Thank you!
By AA I mean a two year associates degree. Bootcamps nowadays are like practical CS curriculums compressed down to six months
Science - always.
Yeah mr white. Magnets, b**tch
I have an MIS degree, it's basically useless. You should definitely persue computer science! How much more time would it take you to get the BS instead? Can you double major in business and comp sci? You don't need a master's degree to be a SDE so I wouldn't bother with that.
@Microsoft I can do a double major in MIS and bag the BA in comp science with one extra semester. A BS in comp sci + MIS double major would probably take me two extra semesters instead of 1. And fuck yea it’s useless lol. I thought I’d be learning way more technical stuff and it’s mostly business stuff, not what I really consider technical :(
Kinda surprised it would only take 2 extra semesters considering the overlap between MIS and comp sci is very little. But, if it's only 2 semesters I would do it if it results in you coming out of school with the science degree and also knowing how to code.
Ya by my 3rd year of MIS I realized it was useless and added on economics because I was bored. I wish I had done what you are trying to do now, I think a CS degree would have been so much more useful.
Plus TC is garbage, and you know, TC or GTFO.
You can definitely make good money in business roles at FAANG. but if your passion is in engineering then you should go after it
An undergraduate degree in CS is impressive. Commit and finish your degree. A BA vs BS will not matter. Depending on your uni it just tells me you took a few more maths and maybe one more cs class. No one cares. Graduate get a few years work experience and you'll be fine.
I was in this dilemma too and decided to take an extra year to get a bs, I think it really only makes a difference when applying to top tier corps like Google
I got a BA didn’t affect me
Wrong, you’re at CapOne
Not doing leetcode affected him
