I have a 6 year old misdemeanor on my record for wet reckless driving (reduced from DUI) which shows up from my background check. Anyone know if this will cause me to fail my background check at my new job? I haven’t heard from HR since my initial email to fill out my background check, so not sure how I’ll be notified (if at all) or if anyone has experience, if HR cares about a bad driving record?? Any insight appreciated!
Yes my husband had a similar experience, it did show up on his background check (just don’t lie about it) but he was fine. He got through job offers with 2 companies, as long as you can reasonable explain it then all good!
If your job does not involve driving, you can reasonably get yourself to work, and it's really 6 years ago, then you should be fine. There will be a few exceptions but I'm guessing this isn't a clearance job otherwise you'd have discussed this with them already.
Even getting a clearance should be easy if you’re open and honest with someone like that from 6 years ago
Unless your job involves driving or you lied (in writing) about this during the application process, you should be okay.
Wet/slow reckless is a misdemeanor. Job applications only ever ask for felonies. This isn't even a "lie of omission", because nobody would've asked or cared.
Read the fine print, but most background checks say explicitly that they exclude DUI and driving offenses.
Thanks everyone - to add clarification, my job is behind the desk (no driving), and I don’t remember being asked about it on the application. I wanted to disclose it but there was no place for me to.. I’m gathering that I should be safe so thank you!
Probably not for anything that doesn’t involve driving. In California, it drops off for purposes of background checks after 7 years, too. And, CA has “banned the box,” meaning you can’t be forced to indicate if you’ve been arrested or convicted of a crime in the application stage.
Any update on this?
Uh I doubt it. But don’t lie about it if they’re going to find out anyway.
