Hi, I signed with a Google last week, and the start date on the onboarding portal says Sep 24th. But they only sent me the background check yesterday, and the travel agency has not reached out to me yet. I haven't given notice yet, and would need to give notice tomorrow for a full 2 weeks. Should I give notice tomorrow regardless of the status of the background check and travel booking? Or should reach out to my recruiter or the candidate help team to try to delay my start date by a week, and hold off on giving notice and booking travel until I know the background check is done (or wait to do that until tomorrow only if the background check still hasn't finished)?
You don't have an offer don't give notice until you have signed
What do you mean "you have signed"... I did sign the offer, but it said that employment was contingent on the bgc
The best thing we can do for you is nothing. Unfortunately. Best advise is to call/email your recruiter and ask directly.
I would wait till everything has passed to give notice. The background check is pretty quick if everything goes smoothly. I think travel doesnât contact you till a few days after youâve cleared that. Why is two weeks mandatory? Itâs usually preferred
Its not mandatory but I like and respect my current company. They deserve it
Yeah just tell Google that your start date may have to be moved by a week or so depending on how fast the bgc team can move. Nothing to worry. It is a very routine thing.
You can change start date if backgrounds check isnât cleared in time and you donât have Sufficient time
How do ask this without sounding like I'm hiding something? It seems weird to say I'm not comfortable with my start date as is and request to move it back a week so I can give notice only after the background check clears, like I'm expecting to fail the background check, or unexcited for the opportunity (neither of which are true, I should pass and I'm really excited)
It's rather common knowledge to not give notice until background clears. Once it starts, it takes about 2 days and you can see the progress. I get where you're coming from though regarding looking shady. Best bet is to ask recruiter for advice.
Who in the history of mankind ever didnât clear the background check?! Unless you lied. I wouldnât wait for that.
Seriously, you don't know what your background check will reveal? Unless you are a felon, stalker, or lied on your resume BGC is just a formality. Your referrals already cleared, right?
Yes, the chances of an issue are slim, but itâs not about whether youâre a criminal and donât know it or you lied and aren sure of the outcome. You have to rely on a bunch of poorly organized and inefficient parties. For instance, has your credit report been 100% accurate your entire life? Mine sure hasnât (donât even remember once where the 3 bureaus had the same info). What if the background check finds someone with your same name? What if a 3rd party got something completely wrong? What if you worked in at a company thatâs hard to verify or if you worked in a country where the process is horrendous. Those will probably work themselves out eventually, but a number of things could cause delays in the whole process.
Ask your recruiter. I would not give notice till everything is green

Be matter of fact about it... Hey <recruiter>, I was taking a look at my checklist and I realized that my background has not been completed. Given the fact that these things have a way of getting stuck, I do not feel comfortable giving notice at my current company. Is there a way to accelerate the process? Anything I can do to help? Man or woman up! Tell the recruiter that you want to shift start date by 3 more weeks because 1) you can be honest about your situation or tell that 2) you want to have more days of vacation to reenergize before Google or 3) going to Vegas to get laid. All of these are legit reasons.
Wait until bgc is finished
