I've been an intern at IBM as a student and I accepted the returning full-time offer after I graduate (82k + 10k signing). Before I accepted the offer, I was interviewing with one of the FANG companies for the heck of it. As of recently, I was given an offer that's higher than what IBM offered and everyone on my team recommends that I accept the new offer since I will accomplish so much more outside of IBM. Now the problem is what type of repercussions I'll face for backing out of an accepted offer and how do I let my manager know about my decision to leave IBM?
Nothing will happen. Give them a 2 weeks notice and leave.
None. Just send an email.
You’ll get blacklisted by IBM but who cares
None. Just be nice about it and move on with your life.
Did you take the $10k? Other than you don't get that and your current manager will remember this (not that that is a bad thing). You'd probably have no trouble getting re-hired at IBM in 2 years. You've done nothing wrong.
Think about it this way. IBM would fire you and outsource your job to India if it helped with their bottom line. This is business.
Sounds like you just accepted IBM's offer but haven't started it. If this is the case, then simply tell them you received a better offer outside. You don't need to do anything else. If you've started already, then say the same thing but be prepared for questions like which company is it? Can we know the new offer so we match?... Just be polite and professional and you might be able to not get blacklisted by them. But even if you do, who cares?! It's IBM.
I went through this myself. Just reach out to your soon to be manager at IBM and inform them of your recent new opportunity. As long as you haven’t started and haven’t received your sign on bonus, it should be pretty straightforward.
It's considered bad form, but as long as you are not dead set on working at IBM later in your life, it's fine
