Basic Interview Questions

Hello Blind fam! I am here to seek advice. For some reason I always have trouble answer the following questions: 1) what are u leaving current company? / why are you exploring other opportunities? 2) what are you looking for in the next steps of your career? I honestly dont know what the interviewer is looking for but my honest answers are as follows 1) I am exploring new oppotunities because I am with my current company for 3 years now and i want to explore other companies to learn how they operate as a team. I also feel like my learning curve has been plateau. 2) Not gonna lie, TC is definitely part of the reason. However, I would say the main thing I am looking for in my next role is mentorship. I value learning and enjoy learning from someone who has more experience than I am. I dont mind mentor Junior Devs but I just dont want to be the most senior on a team. Any advice would be much appricated! Thank you! YOE: Almost 4 TC: 80K

1) This is a really poor answer. It’s incredibly vague and doesn’t provide any insight into why you’re looking. What aren’t you getting in your current role? What specifically about the role you’re interviewing interests you? Why do you want to work for said company? Why do you feel you’ve plateaued? 2) Makes you sound unqualified and low skilled. What do you want to learn? Why don’t you want to be the most senior? Are you not a good leader? What motivates you? What drives you? What value will you be bringing?

Thanks for the input. 1) If u don’t mind could u share How you would answer it? 2) it’s not like I am not a good leader. It’s just that I don’t want to be the most senior on the team. I don’t learn anything from anybody.

For 1) if you feel you’re not learning, talk about why you aren’t learning. Is the work not challenging? Does your team not accept/appreciate trying different things? Is there a certain product you want to work on? What type of work do you enjoy that you aren’t getting to do?

It is taboo to talk tc being your aim. Unfortunately speaking half truths and lying skills are assessed during interviews.

We all know we are trying to change company to work on something new, learn a new technology, work at a specific location, get more diverse experience, progress our career, run away from an out-of-hands toxic environment and increase our compensation because most companies do not reward long term employees. These are the honest answers and if people are answering anything else they are just making the answer up to create a good facade and are fake people we don't want in this industry. Unfortunately the fake people end up getting 99% of the jobs.

I usually say 1) been 5y in my current team. Looking at taking on the next big challenge either outside or inside my current company and am exploring what's out there 2) say what's missing in my current role. For me: I've been less hands on in the previous year and mostly mentoring/ architecting projects. Want to be more hands on, do more core ML and also publish. I try to use that conversation so we can eliminate if it's a bad fit early on.
