I'll be relocating to the Bay Area. I'm looking for apartments close(<=1 mile) to the Cal Train Stations (Redwood City, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara). I plan on walking to the Station and riding the train to get to work(Redwood City) Are there any areas you'd recommend ? Also, I noticed a lot of the apartments I like either have bad reviews or no reviews. I'm using apartments dot com for my search. I need a 1bedroom but for $200-300 more, I'd love to get a 2bedroom as well. My upper bound is ~2400(1B) - $2700(2B) for now. TIA!
In SJ alone it’s virtually (almost) impossible to find anything decent below $2,300 for a one bedroom. Takes a walk-in to realize pictures online are sometimes deceiving in showing actual state of the apartment. Price point moves up if you consider Santa Clara or Mountain View, especially proximity to train station. That is my experience as of last August when I had to do intensive apartment hunting.
Thanks, how do you qualify "decent" ? Based on reviews ? For me, I'm trying to get an apartment while I'm out of state. So that's a problem. I could find temp accommodation for a while but that's not my first option.
Decent for my standards of living, it is definitely highly subjective. But even the non-remodeled units that house cockroaches in them seldom go for less than $2k :(
If the median 1bed is 3600...maybe consider a roomate?
Either rescind your offer or re negotiate your salary. I am not an Indian but i learnt BHK is an Indian term for separate bedroom, living room and kitchen? That would eliminate studios. You'll be looking into minimum $3500 per month apartments
Yup. Studios are out of my consideration. Is that the range across SC/RWC/Sunnyvale ?
I honestly don't know any area in the south bay area that's as low as 2500 per month
You can stay near san jose caltrain station. It will barely add 10 mins on top of sunnyvale
What's a BHK?
Bedroom Hall Kitchen. I'll update my post to just say bedroom
Depend on your standards of living. I live in Palo Alto fro 2.5k 30 min walking distance from the Caltrain in 2br. I had to refurbish a lot but would say it is decent now. Also lIving with a roommate.
How do you refurbish a rental apartment ? What happens when you leave?
I just bought a new mirror, shelf’s, sink , dishwasher and repaired the balcony... so just tiny adjustments I agreed with my landlord that every side pays half of it. I have a 3 years lease with no raise so I am gambling that I want to say there for a while. Also I got a garage (included in rent) for free because of this ;)
I live in SF, 1 bedroom apartment and pay 2.8k... Surprised to see the prices in towns outside of the city!!
Where do you live? Tenderloin?
Lol Hayes Valley, newly refurbished apartment
Lol $2700 in the cities you mentioned for 2 bedrooms AND near the Caltrain???? I paid 2900 for 1 bedroom in San Jose nowhere near Caltrain. Op, $2400 is what I started paying in rent 4 years ago. If anything, $2400 should be a minimum nowadays. Unless you want housemates. How about working remotely?

Which would you rather be at the end of your career?
My advice is good luck lol. Santa Clara maybe you can get those prices but unlikely for Sunnyvale and certainly not RWC.
Oh interesting. I thought RWC was the relatively less expensive area. I haven't searched for anything in RWC so far though.
Redwood City is quite expensive now, unless you’re looking in the (increasingly shrinking) rougher areas. For reference, the new apartments going up in RWC are all 4000$+ for a 1 bedroom.
