Never been to Bay Area - finally visited SFO. It is little bit s******e! Unclean, too many homeless on the roads asking for money and food, lodging is quite expensive. Never understood why there is so much state tax on top of federal ones?! Houses are so tiny everywhere and cost millions.
Stay in midwest
Why stay in Midwest? He raised a really good point. SF is the dirtiest city I have been too as well. Perhaps the OP should visit south bay.
Stay in sfo
Most old cities are like what you described. Seattle is like that too except for the newer amazon areas
I'm from Midwest and moved to Seattle. Best decision I ever made. I would definitely not go to Bay Area, but I think that's more to do with age and life stage. I have wife, dogs, kids, so having roommates or living in some 2 BR apartment won't cut it, and neither will commuting 1.5 hrs or something crazy. Seattle is still really expensive, but much less than SF. People complain about the weather, but those people didn't come from the Midwest. The summer here is absolutely amazing with no rain, low humidity, few bugs, and about 80 degrees everyday. Spring and fall are also beautiful, but with more frequent rain. Winter is overcast and rain on most days, but still in the 40s and 50s everyday. Much better, imo, than 4 degrees. Also, Seattle gets about the same amount of rain as Midwest, it's just light rains spread across many days instead of infrequent downpours. We also have a million companies: Amazon, Google, Facebook, Microsoft, lyft, uber, snap, Zillow, Boeing, Apple...etc.
If you really have a choice, go with Seattle. I lived in both areas and have been in the Seattle area for a long time now. I could never see myself living long term in the Bay Area. Look at the Eastside, especially if you have kids. The public schools are great in most areas unlike the Bay Area where the better schools are mostly only in the most expensive areas.
I'm from bay area and please go to Seattle. It's already crowded & expensive here.
People from the Midwest end up hating both.
I grew up in the Midwest and moved to SF Bay area 20 years ago. Much better weather, the ocean and great career opportunities. I can't see myself living in the Midwest working for a boring company with a decades old work culture. Plus can't beat the compensation. We need more talented people from the Midwest to work in Silicon Valley. I know many people in the Midwest that.are as talented or more.talented than junior engineers on an H1B visa.
