I read this article, it's making me think - if I can't afford SF prices I can just buy in east bay and commute to sf right? I have a family so I want to look for a surburban area. I'm looking at Oakland, San Leandro, Hayward in my price range currently.. Can't afford union city, Fremont, pleasanton, or castro Valley :( what do you think? I've been going to open houses for a while and found an agent to help recently.

TC ~200-300 (for anonymity)

    TC 200K you can afford $1M. There are plenty of SFH under $1M in Daly City, South SF or even some parts of SF. I don’t know why you have to go to east bay.

      I can't! I don't have enough down payment, too young and inexperienced to have been able to amass enough. I tried to get pre-approved and don't come close to 1 mil. Plus even if I could, 1 mil for first home would be extremely stressful for me, living paycheck to paycheck

      OK, with 200K TC you should aggressively save up at least $70K to $80K per year.

      You should have at least $150K before buying. If you have TC 200K to 300K and don’t have $150K saved up within a couple years then you have a spending problem.

      I started with super low TC and only recently got decent amount after switching company, so it'll take a while to afford 1 mil home! But I'll get there. Thanks.

      OK, just don’t go to a bad neighborhood. Some parts of Oakland are very tough.

      I've seen some decent homes that are very affordable for me in this price range though. Are you currently renting or do you own, @Oracle?

      @LinkedIn your 70-80K and 150K numbers make sense - I agree

    TC 200k you cannot do 1M. Please be conservative. My advice is to find something walkable from a Bart station.

    What's your price range? Newark has homes at 600k to 700k and is a safe place

      OP
      Max 700K. Don't you think that may be an exaggeration for Newark? Average is 950K just like union city and Dublin and higher than castro Valley, which i can't afford

      Ohhh I'm not looking for condo, but for a starter sfh. 685K + HOA seems more than spending 700K on sfh though

    How important are schools to you? If you have kids and not planning on private school, wise choice would be smaller house in a good school area. You can find a decent 1500+ sqf 3-bed home for 900k in Dublin or 1M in Pleasanton or condo for 700K

      Not sure, but look at a crime map before you make any such purchase and schools.
