Has anyone ever transferred south? Is there a comp drop? Is it a standard? Where can we find these geo comp differences? TIA.
That’s how they justify their lower pay. Really, COL is high in desirable areas, but low(er) in undesirable areas. On average it makes the COL seem lower.
What companies are in that area that are FAANG tier?
Irvine sucks, if you’re gonna go south at least go somewhere worthwhile like Santa Monica or San Diego.
You wanna live in Irvine because it is IRVINE; no other place like here: clean, nice housing, quality of living. However, very few opportunities.
Irvine is like living inside a big mall. It sucks.
Haha I guess I was trying to ask my google colleagues about our comp policy. Clear COL differences like Bay Area vs Atlanta would be obv but I didn’t think LA had a significant cost of living decrease. Esp where our offices are in west LA.
Your base may stay the same. But overall TC will go down. COL is less down there, but the nice pockets are just as expensive. LA is a cluster F. Unless you’re young or childless, you likely won’t like it. Irvine/OC is the best area if you have kids. The beach culture down there is very laid back, which comes across as boring for the younger crowd. Everything is master planned and landscaped. It’s a complete reality bubble down there that is both good and bad depending on your perspective. I’m an OC guy myself.
I moved from Seattle to LA (Santa Monica) and i really like it. cost of living is higher but better weather is worth it.
Way better weather.
