Been at Amazon at international location for 6 months. What's my best next move?
Graduated software engineering w/3.9GPA from top 50 uni. US citizen. Interned at HQ and got return offer, asked to go abroad.
I don't care too much about comp overall but I want to grow my career as quickly as possible and get myself to a company/projects that are more meaningful/cooler to me (like Spire, Premise Data, Flatiron Health, Trialspark, etc.) I'm not suited for big corporate shit
That said, I feel weird to transfer after 6 months and I am learning a lot every day on the job even if I don't give a shit about amazon as a business too much.
My manager+skip seem to believe in me and are pushing for me to go for promotion in August (11 mos after joining) and I'll know in October. Current plan is to get L5 and ask to xfer back to US. With new offer in hand shop around other companies at L5 level?
1. Is it worth it to wait for L5? Will it make some tangible difference in finding a job somewhere else? How can I maximize returns on a new position in terms of responsibility and options while job hunting?
2. I have the option of building a Coral service from scratch integrating native code etc, vs working on ML research for Sims with an L7, what would you guys think is a better use of my time in terms of hireability?
3. Where should I go next?
What do you guys think?
