Being courted by Uber after I declined them last year for FB. What’s changed?Jul 3, 2018
I want first hand specific stories from Uber NYC. I was very happy to walk away in Nov 2016. I could taste the toxicity.
- Uber tappI just came back from visiting the NY office and things are going well there. That office was never toxic, the drama was in SF a year ago. Since then everyone who wanted to leave left, people who were jerks, fired and now things are pretty good.
I personally like working here, a lot. Dara did a big cleaning (skeletons out of the closet), we are still growing massive (esp in NYC & EATS), we still have a lot of autonomy and IPO is fast approaching in 2019. Engineering is still small compared to big companies like FB & Google and we’re building up many of our global systems.
Ok, here’s a juicy story: one of the first mobile engineers who was known to lose his temper with others at times... he got sacked about 9 months ago. At the time when Dara came in and we out a zero tolerance for being a jerk. But this was also SF.
- As a NY engineer, since I see a bit of snark in your post, I’d rather prefer you stay at FB than come join us. Good luck!
- No problem, I may have misconstrued it too so good to know that wasn’t your intention.
Were you interviewed for EATS or Infra? I work in EATS and as others have alluded, NYC EATS is a really nice org at Uber right now. That line of our business is doing really well which leads to an almost endless amounts of interesting work. The NYC office also has some cool perks like free UberEATS for dinner (as long as you stay until 7 pm) which allows you to sample any of the hundreds of restaurants if you are staying late.
For those coming from FANG, the decision usually comes down to comp and trading liquidity for paper money. To help with that trade off, I can only offer my own personal opinion and not much else. Once you can come to terms with the comp side of things, the culture, the work and the perks are all fantastic.Jul 5, 20181
- Google ACowswamiI was contacted four times when I declined them for G. Each time I politely declined stating that I am not looking to move outside of Google at the moment.
