Being full remote sucks.

After 7+ years working in an office with team members, I am working at home full time now and I hate it. I thought I will have a lot more time to do stuff like contributing to open source projects to improve my skills or have another hobby or just happy I wont be driving in this bay area traffic. Yet, I am less motivated now and feel lazy all day. I want to go back to work and hang around with other people. Damn I am not even sure if that is what I need, but I will try. tc: 200k

I’m working fully remote after working in an office with other human beings. This sucks!!! I hate it

Wow, I appreciate this perspective. I'm in the loop for Stripe remote. Are you a social person in general? What lead you to go remote in the first llace.?

PayPal testenv?y OP Sep 11, 2019

Yes I think I am social 🤔. The job just happened. Just my whole team happened to be remote.

I feel you. I work in an office surrounded by people in my .org but my entire team is remote. Most days I don’t talk to anyone in person. It’s depressing, and I still have to drive into work.

I have a similar situation working from home one day and then commuting to sit with other groups depending on where I find a seat. I’ve probably gone 12 years at my location and had two short conversations with someone in my building. My closest team member is on the other side of the country.

Damn. I will go mad! You probably have much better self control.

You gotta have some ground rules for that. It's not jumping into WFH just like that. Create some rules to differentiate you work place from your home life. Do some running early in the morning. End your work day as if you would be in an office. Talk to your teammates more than usual, even for small talk. Be relentless with the lunch or any other breaks in the day... and most important... follow through! Hope you feel better soon

Pay for a co-working space.

I am fully remote now. I thought WFH is not an good option in the beginning. But it needs disciplined approach. You have to separate the work place in home. Start your day as if you are going to office. Do over communicate with team via slack or any tool that you have. Jump onto video call often if you think chat is not enough. Read blogs from people who do remote work. It takes time but you can build it over time.

I see what you are saying. However, without enough f2f interactions, I feel I am becoming sad.. maybe because I'm more of a social person.

American Express searchtop5 Sep 11, 2019

Yeah me too. I do lots of pair programming at times to keep close to your teammates.

It sucks ass. Did it for 6 months; could not stand it. Stunts your career growth, turns your social skills into crap (as if tech ppl need more of that), and removes basic human contacts. I am taken but I still like to look at the menu.

Do you work closely with other developers during your routine work? Or do you go solo for weeks at a time?

PayPal testenv?y OP Sep 11, 2019

Only interaction with team is during the 20 minute stand-up in the morning.

Trainer Road xcq Sep 11, 2019

Oh. Well it's not surprising you feel disconnected. Ha ha. Can you get involved in group projects? My team is full-time remote and I feel disconnected as well if we don't have a 3-4 person video call (devs only) at least once per week or two. We talk about ongoing project stuff, but also mix in chatting/BSing. Usually lasts an hour or two. Easily one of the more productive uses of my time since it helps me stay engaged.
