Best Companies for Product Managers in Seattle

Thank you very much in advance for your guidance and time. I am an L7 Principal Product Manager at Amazon. Been here 4 years (yes, my initial stocks have vested), and I don't see an upside in compensation or in skill set improvement. Looking for a change. a) What are some companies where there is good Product / Business work happening? b) Also, if you bring up Microsoft, Facebook etc., it will help if you can point to specific orgs in those companies that doing great work (like Azure at MSFT - just an example, I am not sure if its a good place to be in MSFT)? c) What is the equivalent level (internal level + external job title) to an Amazon L7? d) What is the comp range at those companies at that level?

At your level in your career, it’s hard to just slot into a new role like others so easily and keep your career momentum. I think you’re going to do better if you work through management who already know you or folks who were impressed with your past work. At that level you really need a bigger support network of peers to support you towards upper management more.

I agree with ^ I see an influx of people from Dell to Msft. They all worked or knew our new Sr Director from Dell. I am not saying they didnt have 5+ interviews but knowing people in your new job helps a lot Or you can do what he did, join first and then build your own empire. Perfect Msft tried n tested strategy

I would also say that at that level you need to bring something specific l/special to the table. Great track record managing big teams? Deep technical skill in a particular field? Sales rainmaker? You have to know what you bring to the table and specifically what you are looking for. In other words pick the job not the company.

Are you a PM or PMT job family? I was recently promoted to L7 PMT and was looking outside. Here are my thoughts. You need to figure if you want to stay in Seattle - this would be a limiting factor, since the pool is limited for senior positions. At MSFT, level 65 is principal, however I know two Amazon L6 PMs that got in at this level - I would target higher level, but you will need your network to push you. At Google, they mapped Amazon L7 to L6 PM in most cases, unless you have some skill or knowledge that they need. They would also expect you to be technical. Zillow is also interesting, seems like two Amazon L7 got in at Director level, as far as I know the pay is comparable to Amazon L7, but the benefits are much better. If Seattle is not a must, then the sky is the limit. I would check NY, targeting investment banking or consulting firms for a high comp.

L7 PM for 2 years, and PMT for last two year. I am more of a PM than PMT.
