Nearing 4 year cliff at G. Refreshers not enough. Looking to move to another company with good TC without compromising much on WLB. Suggestions?

TC: 260k (L4)
yoe: 5

That's what I have heard as well. I am wondering how are they able to afford such nice TCs with good WLB

That's good to know. How is the quality of eng there? I know Microsoft could have lower standards for hiring, does that impacts LinkedIn.

In general I would say the quality of engineering is high. This is because the hiring bar is high. In last 2 weeks itself, we rejected couple of borderline candidates from Facebook where I was in the hiring loop. So yeah, LinkedIn like Facebook and Google errs on the side of caution even when the past experience is very strong.

With 5 YOE, 300k is easily achievable from the following companies: LinkedIn, Dropbox, Lyft, Snap, Airbnb, FB. Not sure about WLB though, G is the king of WLB.

Have offers from LinkedIn, apple, Microsoft, Uber. Splunk beat them all by long shot for Senior

LinkedIn Senior is not really senior, Staff can pay 400k. Lyft, Airbnb, FB can pay 400

Yep. I agree. Linkedin senior === SDE 2 but they typically don't offer staff for 5 yoe.

How's diversity there? How common to have teams of engineers that are predominantly from the same country?

Too many teams of engineers predominantly from Norway.

Hmm depends on the team but a few off the top of my head are diverse aka decent split between East Asian/Indian/white

Initial offer of MSFT can exceed your google offer. Go there and chill for 4 years and then boomerang to G.

    MSFT WLB is god tier

Microsoft can provide 300k if you add sign on and get level 64. However you should have a matching experience and interview with a team that has enough budget. You should have 7 yoe and experience at big tech. Need competing offers as well. Microsoft wouldn’t give that offer to L4. If you are E5 or L5 at FB or G or L6 at Amazon, you can shoot for 190k base + 400k rsu + 100k sign on. This will require special approval though. Most of the teams will not give that kind of offer even got level 65 (principal). So all in all, only about less than 15% receives that kind of offer for L64.

LinkedIn on the other hand can provide 300k+ for even 3 yoe.

Why does that matter? Apple needs android engineers too.

    • Facebook zvbxxnm
Just like how google hires a lot of iOS engineers.
      Nov 16
    • Google aiXr60
      OP
It's not the same. Almost all Google apps are developed for iOS as well, so iOS engineers are needed in those product teams. I don't really know of many apple products that have Android apps. There will be some, but in general, the demand will be pretty low.

I doubt you will find a greater ratio of TC:WLB ratio than Google.

That's believable, but my initial equity is running out and I don't want to take a TC drop at Google.

Can you give break down of your tc? Do you divide ur stocks by the vesting period so as to get stocks vested only for this year?
    Nov 15 1
    • Google aiXr60
      OP
Yes ofc it is divided. Breakdown: 130+20(min bonus)+120, now that I calculate it, TC is ~270

For what I have seen, Google engineers learn the habit of putting much time on better design, quality code and good engineering. That doesn’t go well in some companies like Amazon and FB. So I would not recommend moving to such companies. You can shoot for E5 at FB however for close to 400k. LinkedIn is the best bet imo. You will get senior at 300k+.
    Nov 16 1
    • Facebook zvbxxnm
Good design skill is definitely highly valued here, especially on infra side. 5 YOE you should definitely try E5 and get 400k. LinkedIn cap at around 300k, which is a big gap.

Twitter. Dunno your baseline for WLB, but it’s pretty good at Twitter. You can easily pull off that much TC.
