I’m interning in San Francisco and I hate this place. Even for 150K starting TC, I don’t think it’s personally worth it. I would take 100K TC in Southern California over anything in the Bay Area in a heartbeat. Is this comp possible in Southern California?
We can get you 150k starting TC .. submit your resume through linked in and just put the word "blind" at the very bottom in plain text
San Diego is awesome
But Qualcomm is meh =) I know I shouldn't throw stones though. =)
Blizzard in Irvine!
Not much for tech in SoCal. Entertainment is the big industry in SoCal.
How is Process Engineering positions in SoCal? Illumina seems like a good place in San Diego but that’s all I know.
I’m 100% on this level. Let’s just raise a round for a start up and move south. We’ll bring the capital and jobs there
How about snapchat
You can expect 60-80k at most for new grad in Irvine area. There are google offices here but they only hire mid level engineers.
That being said, if you are a new grad, tough it out for a few years in the Bay and rake in the experience and dough (hopefully you aren't wasting it all away on rent and avocado toast). Then see what opportunities open up elsewhere. You'll be in a better position to dictate where you want to live and work. If you spend your 20s in tech in So Cal, you'll have prematurely capped your ceiling for growth and earning potential.
Agree ^
Depends on your role. MSFT has a few hundred positions, google has over 100 as well. Amazon has their studio business there. Netflix has pretty much moved to LA, while Snapchat, Disney, Activision, Riot Games, Aecom, Allergan, Qualcomm, etc are all based in LA.
Why?
San Francisco is incredibly dirty (I see homeless people literally pissing/shitting in the street on the way to work), people work insane hours, traffic is terrible, and it's a struggle for anyone who isn't in tech. I've never seen such severe income inequality and I personally find it very disturbing. I feel like quality of life is better in Southern California.
Yup. Bay Area not worth it unless you are getting 250k+ TC. South Bay blows too. I'll take LA traffic anyday where you can at least escape to a decent beach, which Santa Cruz is not.
